Frameless furniture: do-it-yourself bean bag chair. Frameless furniture: do-it-yourself bean bag Making do-it-yourself frameless furniture

The pain went on for a long time...

The main thing is to decide and get into the problem with your head, and then proceed to resolve it.

The first point (and the most pleasantly quick) is to throw away the old boring wooden-folding sofa that twists the spine.

The second point is to go shopping and understand that there is nothing that satisfies the needs.

The biggest obstacle was her husband's skepticism.

Therefore, the third point is to put the husband on a tourist rug and smooch for two or three weeks.

He is my main critic and evaluator of the viability of my unstoppable undertakings.

The initial data were disappointing. The room is a little over 15 squares. In it: a full bed for a teenage child with an orthopedic mattress, a large closet for him, workplace for preparing lessons, the "wall" as a relic of the past, but terribly comfortable and capacious, a table on wheels (my workplace as a seamstress).

There is very little free space left. But sleeping on small-sized sliding sofas for my husband and me (due to age and accompanying chondrosis manifestations) became completely unbearable ...

I wanted space and freely spread arms and legs.

In addition, I need a floor area approximately 2 * 3.5 m in size for laying pleats.

In short, as a mathematician, it was clear in my head that twice two is not four at all, but as much as necessary.

Having raised all the information on the global web, I came to the disappointing conclusion that you can only help yourself with my own hands. And there was only one conclusion - we are making a frameless sofa-transformer.

The conclusion suggested itself, but the input ... Fortunately, we live not far from an enterprise engaged in furniture polyurethane foam (foam rubber in the common people). We strained ourselves, and persuaded us to make pillows from the right brand in the right sizes for us. Well, then it's a matter of technology.

10m of lining fabric, 10m of flock, a week of work - and voila.

Front view. The combination of beige-chocolate is a compromise between practicality in daytime(we love to drink coffee there) and at least some hint of a bright positive.

This is what the transformation looks like sleeping place(210*160cm):

The seams between the pillows are not felt at all (there were such concerns), but in the legs - this is no longer important.

Here are views from other angles - from the side and from the back.

In fact, such a design is pillows sewn together. They were sewn together in the process, valves were sewn inward along the entire length, the width was within 7-8 mm.

Foam rubber is initially sheathed with lining fabric (reduces wear and simplifies the process of stuffing into covers).

Lightning took 8 meters for 4 pillows and 2 hidden ones for the armrests.

Pillow stitching pattern:

Stages of work:

1. Order 4 foam pillows, dimensions in mm 225*225*1600, 225*800*1600, 225*575*1600, 225*500*1600.

2. She sheathed each one separately with lining fabric.

3. I sewed a flock cover for each pillow with a "zipper" in the end faces along the longest side, and with a call to the sidewalls, if the long side is 1600mm, the zipper is 2m, then a zipper is 20 cm from the sides. otherwise the pillow is very problematic to insert inside. Along the way I sewed in the connecting valves. The parts were cut out with an allowance of 1 cm on each side, this is enough to get it tight, but without excessive tightening.

I am very sorry that there are no photos of the stages of creation, I was carried away by the process, somehow it was not before that.

There are no armrests in the diagram, they were not originally provided, they appeared in the process (sewn to pillow 3).

PPU brand HR3535 can withstand loads up to 120 kg on load-bearing surfaces.

It feels like when you sit down (or lie down) - a fairly solid orthopedic mattress.

Dimensions in assembled form 800 * 1600mm (by floor area).

Pros: absolute mobility, the floor does not scratch, light (total weight is slightly less than 30 kg), the husband does not push, maintainability.

Admire, praise, ask :)

In 1968 Italian designers Francisco Teodoro, Cesare Paolini and Piero Gatti inspired new life in a mattress - a bag stuffed with hay or leaves. Sacco (bag in Italian) was the same mattress stuffed with Styrofoam balls. Since then, frameless furniture has gained popularity in many countries.

A frameless bean bag chair is a fabric cover, 2/3 of the volume of which is filled with foam balls. When a person sits in it, grains under pressure flow into the free parts of the form. Thus, the frameless chair each time takes a new shape perfectly matching the curves of the body. In addition to the classic version - "pears" - there are many other models, each of which dictates certain poses.

Manufacturing technology frameless furniture quite simple and available at home. Before starting work, you should decide on the following points:

  1. How many covers will a frameless chair consist of. Ideally, the inner cover, which is the receptacle of the filler, is duplicated by an external removable cover. It is sewn from a beautiful decorative fabric, it can be removed and sent to the wash without filling the filler.
  2. What fabric will the frameless chair be made from? The inner cover will take on most of the load. For it, it is recommended to use a dense natural blended fabric or Oxford 400 polyester material. It is durable (will not diverge at the seams), light (will not weigh down the chair) and impregnated with water-repellent substances. For the outer cover, dense, non-stretch fabrics are suitable. Keep in mind that pile materials will pick up dust particles and pet hair and will need to be cleaned more frequently. It is better to give preference to special furniture fabrics with dirt and water-repellent impregnations. Such materials can be brushed or machine washed.
  3. Children will be comfortable in a chair of any size. But if you make it small, then no one except the child can use it. For a large man, on the contrary, it is necessary to increase the patterns.

In this article we will tell you how to make a do-it-yourself bean bag chair with a low seat and a medium-height back - up to the middle of the shoulder blades. It will consist of one case made of dense Oxford 600 fabric. It has a dense, durable weave, which allows it to be used for sports ammunition. The reverse side is rubberized, which will protect the filler from water penetration and allow you to clean the chair without resorting to washing.

Necessary materials

  • Oxford fabric 600 - 2.5 m.p.
  • Strong reinforced threads No. 70ll
  • Tractor or spiral zipper No. 5 length 30 cm
  • Sewing machine and needles for heavy fabrics No. 100
  • Tailor's scissors
  • Wax chalk
  • Expanded polystyrene in granules 3 kg (or 250 - 300 liters)
  • Plastic bottle
  • Scotch.

DIY bean bag chair. Stages of work

Cut the material according to the following pattern, adding to the indicated dimensions 1.5 centimeters on each side for seam allowances. It is better to cut out the side parts according to a pattern previously built on paper, then the parts will be symmetrical.

Chip the part of the back and bottom facing inward and grind to the place where the zipper will be located, i.e. leave 30 cm of seam unsewn. Sweep with a temporary hand seam, straighten the allowances, baste and sew on the zipper. Open temporary seams.

Pin facing inwards and stitch front and back pieces. Chip and sweep them with the details of the bottom and back.

All seams can be processed with an overlock or a seam - an imitation of an overlock, which is available on modern machines. Alternatively, to reinforce the seams, you can fold the seam allowance in half and stitch over them.

Baste and stitch the front piece. This seam should not be strengthened further. Turn out the product. Lay a line along the perimeter of the front part, securing a fold 0.7 cm high to it. The resulting edging will strengthen the seam and give visual rigidity to the product.

Fill the case with styrofoam balls. For this you need to take plastic bottle 1.5 l, cut off the neck and bottom so that you get a pipe. If the bottle has a "waist" - even better. Open the filler bag, insert a bottle into it and tape the bag with tape. Make sure that the neck of the bag is completely fixed with tape and the balls will only spill out through the bottle. Unzip the chair and put the cap on the bottle. Close the zipper, fixing it on the “waist” of the bottle. Holding this place with your hand, turn the filler bag upside down. Stuff the chair to about 2/3 of its volume. If there is too much filler, the chair will not "hug" and will be uncomfortable. If too little, then his landing will be too low.

All materials for the chair can be purchased at regular sewing stores. The only difficulty may arise with the purchase of filler. It is sold by firms engaged in the production of frameless furniture or manufacturers of thermal insulation materials. An important point is the quality of the filler. Ideally, the expanded polystyrene granules should be the same size - 4 - 5 mm. If the balls are too small, then the chair will be heavy. If it is too large or of different sizes, then the filler fluidity will be lost, and you will have to distribute it inside the chair with your hands. Also, sometimes the so-called “crushed” is used to stuff frameless bean bags. This is a recyclable material that is made from defective foam boards. Such a filler does not flow at all, but only sags under the weight of the person sitting and makes an unpleasant creaky sound. If the filler has a strong chemical smell, it should be aired out for a few days, for example, leaving a bag of balloons open on the balcony, or even pouring them into a cloth bag.

  • If you have settled on a chair with a double cover, then the zipper on the outer one should be long enough so that you can get the inner cover with filler through it.
  • It is better to buy a filler with a small margin, because during active operation it will shrink up to 25%.
  • The finished chair should not be placed near heat sources and should not be bathed in the pool.
  • If you have children, then in the place where the dog of the closed zipper will be located, it is better to sew in an additional valve.
  • Several small grommets can be installed on the faux leather outer case to allow air to escape between the outer and inner case.
  • So that the chair is magnificent and does not lose its appearance even when no one is sitting on it, the outer cover can be duplicated with a layer of synthetic winterizer.

Outwardly, the bean bag looks like a mattress. But under the pressure of human weight, it takes on a comfortable shape. In this case, the spine relaxes, and the person becomes comfortable. Below are options for using frameless furniture in the interior and a master class on making it yourself.

Advantages and disadvantages of frameless furniture

Such furniture has gained popularity due to many advantages:

  • mobility;
  • high comfort;
  • security;
  • budget price.

The covers are easy to wash and change, allowing you to quickly change the interior of the room and adjust to any design project.

The disadvantages include the need for frequent cleaning of the cover due to the lack of legs, the inability to use in classic interiors and the risk of a tear due to the "fighting" of a child or pet.

How to make a bean bag chair with your own hands

Although such furniture is inexpensive, it is more economical to make it yourself. This process is simple, and allows you to make a bean bag chair according to individual taste and size.

What fabric to choose

Frameless furniture consists of two covers. For the internal version, it is necessary to choose a dense and practical fabric. It can be raincoat or mattress textiles, preferably on a natural basis. But at the same time, the fabric should not sit down, otherwise the outer cover will then wrinkle.

If you are not sure about the shrink properties, wash and iron the fabric before cutting.

For an external case, not only practicality and durability are important, but also an attractive appearance. Ideal furniture fabrics:

  • Oxford. The fabric has an anti-claw effect and is water repellent. Durable artificial fibers of polyester and nylon form a density up to 600den. Durable fabric is easy to care for. The disadvantages include the tendency to accumulate static electricity and instability to high temperatures.
  • PU artificial leather. Modern polymer material is affordable and excellent performance quality. The fabric is not afraid of frost, elastic and resistant to mechanical stress, has no smell. PU artificial leather has practically no drawbacks, therefore it is actively used in the production of frameless furniture.
  • Flock. Durable, wear-resistant upholstery fabric with a water-repellent effect. The basis of the fabric is cotton and polyester, the surface is velvety. Good breathability, resistant to pet claws. It is recommended to place furniture made of flock fabric away from heat sources and use a manual wash mode at a temperature not exceeding 40 ⁰C.
  • Velor Corduroy. Corduroy - modern material obtained by innovative technologies. The fabric has a velvet effect, is elastic, can withstand pet claws and is abrasion resistant. In care, it is not recommended to use cleaning products based on strong chemicals, wring out and subject to any rough mechanical impact.
  • Leather. Luxurious and expensive natural material has a high degree of wear resistance and practicality. Genuine leather is breathable and resistant to temperature changes. Caring for this material is simple, the skin is well cleaned of dust and dirt, and retains a presentable appearance for a long time.
  • Chenille. Wear-resistant fabric has a delicate velvety surface. The composition of the material is natural, synthetic and artificial. Soft and elastic chenille resembles velor, but its cost is lower. The disadvantages include the possibility of the appearance of hooks on the fabric.
  • Jacquard. The strong uniform structure of the fabric makes it practical and durable. Jacquard lets air through, as it contains cotton fibers. The material is not sensitive to temperature changes, but it is better to wash it in cool water. Fabric production is expensive, so jacquard is an elite type and has a high price.

It is better to cover outdoor chairs with covers made of Oxford material - it has a water-repellent impregnation and is resistant to dirt.

Filler

Connoisseurs of eco-materials suggest filling such bags with wood chips, natural fluff or legumes. These options are environmentally friendly, but the product requires careful care so that the filling does not get wet, moldy or rot. In addition, such a filler is very fond of rodents.

It is better to use expanded polystyrene balls as a filler.

This material is harmless to the environment and health, durable, not afraid of moisture, fireproof and retains heat well. The only negative can be considered that with incorrectly selected sizes of balls, the product will be harsh. It is necessary to choose granules no more than 5 mm in diameter. 300 liters is the minimum amount for a chair. Synthetic down adds extra softness.

How to calculate the dimensions for a pattern

The diameter of the bean bag varies from 70 to 130 cm. The average product is about 90 cm in diameter and 1.2 m in height. Each cover will require approximately 2.5 m of fabric with a width of 120–140 cm. For a child the pattern and the amount of fabric decreases proportionally, and if you want to make a mini-sofa, it increases. Here are the product patterns different shapes:

  • cover material;
  • filler;
  • Ruler and pencil;
  • scissors, chalk, needles, threads;
  • sewing machine;
  • two zippers.

You will also need a suitable pattern.

Sequencing:

  1. Choose a suitable pattern and transfer it to paper in real scale. It is more convenient to use graph paper, but you can also take an old newspaper.
  2. Lay the patterns on the fabric and cut out, leaving an allowance of 1.5 cm. You should get two cut-out sets of parts - for the outer or inner cover.
  3. Sew the inner bag, it is better to make double or zigzag seams, use reinforced threads. Insert a zipper into one of the seams.
  4. Turn the bag inside out and fill two-thirds of the Styrofoam pellets through the funnel so they don't fly apart. Close the clasp.
  5. Sew the outer bag, insert a zipper in one of the seams. Put it on the chair and close the clasp.

The choice of material for the cover

Before you sew a bag chair with your own hands, you need to decide what fabric will be used for this process. The design consists of elements:

  • outer cover, which must be resistant to dirt, durable, tight and attractive;
  • inner cover formed from durable, breathable and reliable materials;
  • filler, and it is important to first decide what the chair will be filled with.

Initially, it is decided which fabric will be used for bag chairs. For an external product, you can choose different types fabrics. It is important that they have the following parameters:

  • high strength and resistance to abrasion;
  • ease of maintenance, since the outer cover is most often exposed to various influences, and there is also a high probability of contaminating it;
  • attractiveness, since this cover determines how the whole chair will look.

An excellent choice is Oxford fabric, which is used to form awnings or tents. It is durable and easy to care for, so it is perfect for the planned work. As a rule, during production it is impregnated with special compounds that make it resistant to moisture. It is presented in numerous colors, so the best option is chosen for work. Bag chairs, the sizes of which can be different, made of this fabric, can be used not only in residential premises, but also on the street.

Other types of fabrics can be used, such as flock or micro-velvet, but products made from these materials are installed exclusively at home. It is allowed to make your element even from eco-leather, which provides an exquisite and unique model that fits perfectly into various modern interior styles.

The inner cover for bag chairs is usually formed from dense spunbond. It is advisable to choose a variety of it, which is equipped with small holes designed for ventilation of the product. The material has a low cost, so it is considered an excellent choice for creating an inner case. It is usually sold in rolls.

If it is not possible to choose spunbond, then any other fabric that is dense and breathable will do. If you do not provide ventilation of the internal space, then the filler will quickly stick together, so its shape and its parameters change.

Necessary tools to make a bag chair with your own hands

The process of creating a bag chair with your own hands, the master class of which is presented below, begins with the preparation of the tools and materials that are necessary for this work. These include:

  • a lot of fabric, both for the inner cover and for the outer one;
  • in order to receive sealed cases, two zippers of the optimal size are purchased;
  • scissors will ensure the cutting of the necessary elements from the fabric;
  • threads are designed to fasten individual parts of the structure;
  • the sewing machine facilitates the work process, and also ensures smooth, beautiful and durable stitches;
  • filler to fill the inner cover.

In the absence of a sewing machine, it is allowed to do the work manually, but in order to obtain high-quality seams, you must have experience in this area.

Creating a pattern

How to make a bag chair so that it turns out to be even and of high quality? To do this, a detailed and correct pattern is preliminarily created. It is easily formed on its own, and it is also possible to see different types of patterns below. As a rule, they are all identical, but may differ in the size of the bag chair.

The whole process is divided into the following steps:

  • patterns are made, and it is desirable that they initially have the required dimensions, which will subsequently affect the dimensions of the bag chairs;
  • as a result, 4 main elements are obtained, with the help of which a bag chair is created;
  • an economical option involves imposing a pattern on the fabric itself, after which the necessary elements are cut out.

Patterns of bag chairs can be different, since they completely depend on what dimensions and other parameters the product will have after work. During the creation of the main details of the product, it is important to monitor the economical use of fabric.

Cover tailoring

After creating a cutting for both covers, their tailoring begins. To do this, it is important to decide in advance what dimensions the bag chair will have. The process is carried out in the following sequence of actions:

  • two flat blanks are created. To do this, all elements are fastened to each other with pins, after which side seams should be basted on the wedges;
  • shaped side seams are connected sewing machine or manually, after which they are smoothed, for which it is advisable to use an iron equipped with a steam mode;

Before you start stitching the parts, fasten them with needles
  • on the front side on the outer cover, side seams are sewn off;
  • extreme wedges are folded on both blanks, after which they are basted. When working with the outer cover, the remaining side seams are sewn from the bottom and top, and it is important to leave about 40 cm on either side, and this distance is necessary for sewing in the zipper. The same steps are performed for the inner cover, but no more than 35 cm is left for the zipper. All the resulting seams are ironed;

All seams must be overlocked.
  • for the remaining unsewn sections, zippers are pinned or tacked. Their middle should be in the center of the ironed seam. After fitting, the zippers are sewn;
  • as a result of the actions performed, the seams of the bag will be obtained, which have a tubular irregular shape, which taper slightly at the top;

How to sew a zipper
After the wedges are sewn together, you get such a base
  • the handle of the future chair is made, for which the prepared part is folded, and only inside out. It is sewn in a place where there is a long edge. After it is turned out on the front part and ironed;
  • the existing blanks of both covers are turned inside out. The top is sewn to the outer cover, which is tucked to the outer pipe, after which the handle is inserted;

For ease of use, a zipper should be sewn into the bags.
  • the bottom of both covers is ground off, and the resulting circles are attached. After the work is done, the covers are turned inside out.
Outer chair cover

After creating the covers, it is important to decide what will fill the inner element. The selected filler is loaded into the product in such a way as to completely fill it. To do this, the inner cover is inserted into the outer one, and then stuffed with the selected material. After creating a bag chair, a pillow or other similar elements are often made that ensure the comfort of using the product.

Filler selection

Before creating this product, it is important to decide what it will be filled with. Most often, granules formed from expanded polystyrene are selected for these purposes. They are represented by small balls with high hygienic parameters. They do not absorb foreign odors. At the same time, they have excellent thermal insulation properties. The price of the material differs in availability.

In addition to expanded polystyrene, the following fillers can be used:

  • wood shavings;
  • down, feathers or wool;
  • different types of cereals.

Frameless furniture, made by hand or factory-made, does not have a rigid base, due to which it can take on different forms.

Frameless furniture is very comfortable, functional, versatile and practical.

To make furniture patterns, you will need the following inventory:

  • sewing machine;
  • polystyrene foam balls in the form of a filler;
  • table;
  • all accessories for sewing;
  • fabric for the inner cover;
  • decorative fabric for outer upholstery;
  • zippers, fasteners, buttons and other decorative elements;
  • furniture patterns.

Varieties and manufacturing methods

Before proceeding with the manufacture of complex frameless furniture, it is recommended to start sewing simpler paraphernalia. For example, you can make a pillow. This accessory is presented in the form of a trihedral pyramid, the base of which is 110 cm, and the sides are 80 cm each.

Seam allowances are 1.5 cm on each side. The resulting sides of the pyramid are stitched together. If the fabric is loose, then the resulting sections are processed with an overlock. In the process of sewing on the triangle base of the pyramid, a zipper is sewn in. The outer cover is sewn in the same way.

The pear chair is simple model furniture without a base. To make it, you need six wedges, a round bottom and a top hex piece. This is sewn in the same way as the pillow. In the same way, you can sew a drop chair in a classic style.

For the manufacture of a chair-mat, a pattern of furniture is not required. Initially, two rectangles are sewn together, the width of which is 120 cm and the height is 180 cm. In this case, you will need to sew on a zipper. It should be noted that the case should be filled with balls by 2/3. With the help of furniture patterns and a special pattern, you can sew a flower chair.

Due to the patterns of furniture, a sewing machine and the necessary accessories, you can make a bean bag chair. Such furniture consists of two covers. The top has a zipper that makes it easy to remove the case. The bottom cover is filled with expanded polystyrene balls and sewn tightly. This material is hypoallergenic, waterproof and durable. The size of the balls in diameter is 1-5 mm. Due to their free rolling, the balls take the shape of the body of a person sitting in a chair. Such hand-made frameless furniture is convenient for watching TV, reading newspapers and relaxing.

To sew the inner cover of the bean bag, a dense fabric is used, for example, satin, nylon, faux fur, velveteen, velor and other varieties.

Step by step work

To create such furniture with your own hands, like a pear-shaped bean bag chair, you will need:

  • sewing machine;
  • ruler;
  • scissors;
  • compass;
  • pencil;
  • threads;
  • graph paper for furniture patterns;
  • fabric for covers;
  • zipper, the length of which must be more than 50 cm;
  • filler in the form of polystyrene balls;
  • furniture patterns.

To make such furniture with your own hands, 100-110 cm high, you will need to sew two covers. Moreover, each element consists of six trapezoid wedges and two round parts. When choosing a fabric for the top cover, you need to take into account the color scheme of the interior of the room in which such furniture will be installed. For a children's room, the best option is to buy fabric with the image of fairy-tale characters. For the bedroom, you can choose a plain canvas. As a rule, the manufacture of such furniture with your own hands will require about 5 m of fabric.

Initially, a furniture pattern is made. To do this, millimeter paper is used, on which the dimensions of the wedge are applied. For example, the height is 100 cm, the width of the base is 30 cm, the width of the upper part is 12 cm. It should be remembered that the lower and upper lines of the wedge should have a deepened shape. In the center of the wedge from the top line, a bottom is marked - 2.5 cm. Further, the marked points are connected to the upper corner points of the wedge using a smooth line. To do this, you can use the compass. Similar steps are made in relation to the bottom of the wedge.

Circles - the top and base of the furniture - are drawn on paper with a pencil and a ruler or compass. In this case, the radii are 30 cm and 12 cm. Since this pattern is simple, it can be immediately performed on the fabric. To do this, use soap or chalk. You should also consider seam allowances, 1.3-1.5 cm.
