Tsugunov Anton Valerievich

Reading time: 8 minutes

The kitchen set is subjected to heavy loads, so sooner or later there comes a time when it loses its attractiveness. But this does not mean that strong lockers that will last for many more years will have to be thrown away, replacing them with new ones. There is another way out: restoring kitchen furniture will help restore them to a decent look and save money. Consider the methods of such repairs available at home.

Restoration of kitchen facades: different types

Facades are part of the kitchen, which is constantly in sight. They primarily suffer during operation and lose their original beauty. Each type of facade has its own service life, its own characteristics of restoration and repair.

  • Laminated. The base is MDF or chipboard, on which the melamine film is laid. They are inexpensive, but the coating wears out quickly. It is impossible to laminate the surface again at home, therefore, depending on the nature of the damage, another method of updating is selected.
  • Framework. The perimeter of the facade consists of MDF, and glass, plastic, laminated chipboard or rattan are placed in the center. Not resistant to damage, but easier to repair.
  • Coated with plastic or PVC. These materials make the furniture attractive and resistant to damage at an economical price. It is not difficult to restore such facades: the most common problem- peeling of the protective layer from the base, solved with glue.
  • Facades made of wood. Elite furniture, which is fabulously expensive, consists entirely of solid wood. Therefore, more often only facade parts are made of wood. For this, species such as beech, teak, oak, walnut, maple are used. These headsets last almost forever. proper care minor damage can be repaired by yourself.

Attention! A selection of photos of headsets before and after restoration is presented at the end of the article.

DIY kitchen restoration ideas

How to breathe new life into the old kitchen furniture? There are quite a few ways:

  • Decorating with stickers will help hide minor scratches and chips.
  • Pasting with a film - will hide more serious damage.
  • Coloring - gives a completely different look to the facades of kitchen sets.
  • Lacquer application - usually used to restore and protect furniture made from natural wood.
  • Decoupage - applying applications or convex patterns.
  • The use of moldings and decorative overlays made of wood or plastic.

For best results, these methods are combined. Let us consider in more detail the methods of restoration and features of restoration different types facades.

Decorative stickers will update the look of the headset and hide minor defects. Before gluing the surface is cleaned and degreased.

With more serious damage, you have to completely change the appearance of the furniture. For kitchen facades made of MDF, painting or pasting with vinyl film is suitable.

Using self-adhesive film

A quick and cheap method to drastically change the look of a headset. The range of films is huge, so you can realize any design ideas.

Tip: choose quality materials. They will cost more, but a thick or textured film will lie more evenly, and it is not necessary to repair small scratches under it: they will be invisible.

Work algorithm:

  • We unscrew the fittings from the facades, clean and degrease the surface for better adhesion.
  • On the reverse side of the film there is a grid with a cell size of 1 cm. Using it, we transfer the shape and dimensions of the pasted surface to the material. It is recommended to leave allowances of 1-2 cm around the entire perimeter.
  • With sharp scissors, carefully cut out the measured fragment.
  • We stick the film from top to bottom, gradually removing the protective coating and smoothing it with a plastic spatula or cloth from the center to the edges.

Important! Try to avoid the formation of air bubbles under the film. If they do appear, there are two ways to remove them. First - until the glue has set, carefully peel off the film and stick it again. The second is to pierce the bubbles with a needle, and then smooth with a spatula.

When sticking, we pay special attention to the edges: in these places, most often the film begins to bulge and peel off.

Coloring

It is important to remember that the paint is applied only to areas that do not have external defects. Therefore, small scratches and chips are sealed in advance with wax or putty.

Acrylic paint or car enamel is used in the work: it is more expensive, but more durable. The car spray is easier to apply, lays down more evenly, better protects it from moisture and temperature in the kitchen.

Coloring steps:

  • We remove the doors and unscrew the fittings. Fixed elements that need to be protected from painting are sealed with masking tape.
  • If the surface of the MDF is covered with a film, remove it. Facilitate the work of a building hair dryer.
  • We process with fine sandpaper, remove dust and degrease.
  • Apply two coats of primer. For hard-to-reach places we use a brush, for flat surfaces - a roller. You can apply a primer with a spray gun. Be sure to let the first coat dry completely before applying the second.
  • The paint is applied with a brush or roller in one direction. The aerosol is applied only with the use of a respirator. The environment also needs to be protected.
  • After the paint has dried, cover the front part with a layer of transparent varnish.

Restoration of kitchen facades made of natural wood

Solid wood furniture looks great, but requires compliance with several operating conditions:

  • The surfaces of wooden sets should be cleaned with soft cloths moistened with soapy water. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners.
  • Do not place hot dishes on the countertop.
  • Humidity in the room should not rise above 70%.
  • Minor damage, scratches should be repaired as soon as possible.

Scratches and cracks on the facades of solid wood furniture are repaired with melted wax. Chips are leveled with putty on wood. After leveling the surface, the restored area is covered with a layer of furniture varnish.

If you need not just minor repairs, but a complete update of the appearance of the facade, replace the entire lacquer coating. This is done in this way:

  • Facades are dismantled and freed from fittings.
  • The surface is carefully treated with fine sandpaper. It is necessary to completely remove the old varnish coating. This is not always easy, especially if there are embossed patterns or indentations.
  • Lacquer shavings and sawdust are removed with a damp sponge or napkin.
  • After drying, the surface is primed twice, allowing each layer to dry before applying the next.
  • Apply varnish with a brush or roller. We form a protective film in several layers, with each subsequent layer being thinner than the previous one. The varnish dries for at least a day in a well-ventilated area.

A different shade of wooden furniture will give a stain or varnish with pigments.

You can change the headset beyond recognition and give it a more modern look, as in the photo, by coloring.

Moldings, overlays and decoupage

These restoration methods will give the kitchen set unique features: the scope for imagination is not limited here.

Before applying jewelry, the surface under them is prepared: the place of application is polished, cleaned and degreased.

A three-dimensional decoupage pattern is formed using a stencil: a material is applied through it to form a bas-relief. A popular option is to use wood putty. After drying, the pattern is polished with sandpaper and covered with a protective layer of transparent or colored varnish.

For decoupage using napkins or decoupage cards, PVA glue is applied to the selected material. Then the drawing is applied to the cabinet door and smoothed out. After drying, 4 layers of matte or glossy varnish are applied.

Moldings are overhead wooden or plastic elements. They, as well as decorative overlays, are glued to a previously prepared surface. For wooden moldings, it is possible to mount on small nails without hats.

Restoration of countertops and kitchen table: interesting ideas

To refresh the countertop or table surface made of chipboard, staining, decoupage and varnishing are used. But there are other ways, such as tiling, as in the photo below.

Enhanced with ceramic tiles The surface of the countertop receives many advantages:

  • Not afraid of water ingress.
  • Becomes more resistant to mechanical damage.
  • Easily washes and is cleared of pollution.

The disadvantage of such an upgrade is a significant increase in the weight of the countertop. But since kitchen furniture is used permanently, there is no big trouble here.

The tile keeps within on normal tile glue. But the work has its own characteristics:

  • First, we fix on liquid nails around the perimeter of the countertop metal corners. They serve as edging tiles and close the end of the coating.
  • We lay the tiles: tightly and with minimal gaps. The glue dries quickly, so you should not cover the entire countertop with it at once. It is recommended to apply it in small portions under one or two tiles.
  • We wait at least 6 hours until the glue dries completely, rub the seams and cover with a protective layer of varnish.

Another original way to transform a countertop is to create a mosaic or ornament under tempered glass. Several rails or corners are screwed to the surface, which will divide the countertop into zones. Decorative filler is poured into these sectors: small pebbles, coins, shells, beads or sand. From above, all this splendor is closed with shock-resistant glass, which is planted on glue.

Burnt-out countertop restoration

Burnt countertops can be restored to their original appearance in this way:

  • Using a milling cutter, carefully select the damaged area. It is necessary to go deeper into the surface with ledges, reducing the area and slightly capturing intact material around the perimeter. It turns out a recess similar to a quarry in miniature.
  • The recess is filled with softened wood putty. It dries quickly, so we tamp it into the recess in small portions.
  • We cut off the protruding excess with a sharp knife, carefully grind the patch, and then polish it.
  • We paint the restored place. In this case, you need to try to reproduce the color and texture of the main part of the countertop.

By combining these methods, you can restore kitchen furniture without a large financial investment. So it will turn out not only to restore the appearance of the old kitchen set, but also to make it unique.

Any, even the most high-quality and reliable kitchen furniture wears out over time and loses its attractiveness.

And to cut the cost of a new kitchen set, the owners have to think about how to update the furniture in the kitchen with their own hands.

In fact, this task is not at all as difficult as it might seem at first glance. If you have installed really high-quality kitchen furniture, then you can extend its “life” almost indefinitely.

Yes, and with modern furniture models that are not designed for a long service, you can cope - the main thing is not to give up and be creative.

Renovation of kitchen furniture

Headset upgrade approaches

Restoring a kitchen set is a rather multifaceted task.

Approaches to its implementation depend on many parameters:

  • What condition is the furniture in?
  • What damage is on it?
  • What do we want to get as a result?
  • What means, materials, and most importantly, what skills do we have?

Without answers to these questions, it is not worth taking on repairs.

  • The easiest way to restore kitchen furniture made of natural wood. In general, the better the kitchen set was originally, the easier it is to restore it.
  • The more damaged the furniture, the more funds will have to be invested in its restoration. In some cases - especially when it comes to inexpensive sets based on MDF or chipboard - it is more rational to simply replace the furniture, since the cost of repairs will approach the price of a new kitchen.
  • It is often easier to drastically change the appearance of kitchen furniture than to return it to its original state. Therefore, even if it seems to you that the kitchen cabinet or countertop is irretrievably damaged, do not despair - show your imagination and make yourself completely new kitchen.

Decor instead of renovation

Before you start repairing kitchen furniture that has lost its original beauty, we advise you to think about it - maybe the repair will have to wait?

Indeed, today there are several ways to decorate kitchen furniture without a radical alteration, while simply hiding the damage.

Therefore, if your kitchen set has lost its presentable appearance not as a result of wear and tear from old age, but simply due to point damage (scratches, chips, stains, etc.), you can use defect masking methods.

  • The first way is to use vinyl stickers. The modern industry offers a fairly wide selection of adhesive-based PVC stickers that are resistant to any impact. Such a sticker is simply applied to the damaged area on the kitchen front or back of the chair - and serves not only as a disguise, but also as an interior decoration.

Advice! Decals need to be carefully chosen in terms of appearance and color so that they look like a natural addition to the kitchen design.

  • The second method is decoupage (pasting furniture with decorative napkins). A special decoupage glue is applied to the damaged area, a thin napkin is laid on top of it, and a layer of transparent acrylic varnish is applied on top - after the glue has dried. Decoupage is one of the most popular ways to decorate furniture, and allows you to create a unique, unlike anything else interior.

You can see examples of kitchen furniture updated using decoupage technology in the photo in this article.

Both of these methods will not only hide minor damage, but also save time and money spent on repairs.

Well, if the damage to the furniture is serious enough - well, you will have to start a full-fledged repair.

Repair of kitchen furniture

Restoration of kitchen furniture with self-adhesive film

The easiest way to update kitchen furniture is to wrap it with self-adhesive vinyl.

Most often, kitchen facades are updated in this way, but other pieces of furniture can also be pasted over with a film - the main thing is that they do not experience a serious operational load.

Advice! To update furniture, choose a quality film, since cheap varieties of this material peel off the base very quickly.

Below are the instructions for updating kitchen facades using film:

  • We remove handles, decorative overlays and other fittings from kitchen furniture that may interfere with gluing. We measure the surfaces that we will paste over with a film - the facade, sidewalls, shelves, etc.
  • According to the obtained dimensions, we cut out the film - to facilitate the work, you can focus on the centimeter grid applied on the back surface of the roll. In places where the film is bent, leave an allowance of about 20 mm.
  • Before gluing the film, prepare the surfaces by thoroughly washing them with a damp sponge and degreasing agent. The better we clean the surface, the more reliable the decorative film will be pasted.

  • Then we proceed to the pasting itself. Having peeled off a few centimeters of the protective film, we apply a decorative film to the surface and begin to smooth it out, gradually removing the protective layer. For smoothing, you can use a special plastic squeegee, or you can simply use your palm - as it suits you.
  • If there is a small bubble under the film, you can try to “drive” it to the edge, or you can pierce it or carefully cut it.

Note! If the film is pasted unevenly, it must be immediately peeled off (with a sharp movement), since after a few hours this will be much more difficult to do.

It is impossible to re-stick the peeled-off film - it still will not hold firmly enough.

This method is one of the simplest and most affordable, since the price of the film used is low.

But the appearance of a kitchen updated in this way will not be the most attractive - therefore, other methods of updating are more often used.

Painting kitchen fronts

A more radical way is to paint facades and other elements of kitchen furniture.

This restoration method makes it possible to completely transform the kitchen - therefore, it can be recommended not only for furniture repair, but also for changing the style of the room as a whole.

Painting is quite simple:

  • We remove the facades from the hinges, dismantle the fittings. We dismantle the remaining pieces of furniture intended for painting to facilitate the execution of painting work.
  • We thoroughly wipe all painted parts with a damp sponge, removing dust and dirt, after which we degrease them.
  • We lay the prepared parts on the work surface, previously covered with plastic wrap.

Advice! All work related to painting and varnishing kitchen furniture should be carried out outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.

  • Using a spray gun, apply a layer of primer to the furniture. Leave the primer to dry completely - it will take about an hour and a half.

  • When the primer has dried, we proceed to apply the paint of the shade of our choice (the painting procedure is shown in detail in the video). For painting, you can use a fairly wide brush, but it will be much easier and faster if we use an airbrush. We apply the paint in several thin layers, after each application, giving time to dry.

In this way, you can get a completely new kitchen in just a few hours - and at the same time it fits perfectly into your new design!

The easiest option is pasting the facades with a film. This will help change the color, as well as hide the defects of the old kitchen furniture resulting from the operation. In case of serious mechanical damage to surfaces, it is possible to replace individual parts (fronts, walls, doors, shelves), as well as to replace furniture fittings (handles, hinges, locks). Fashionable decor trends are decoupage and facade molding, which, thanks to simple operations, will help breathe new life into the kitchen set. A simple and at the same time effective solution is to paint furniture. In any case, the choice of restoration method should be tailored to the needs of each room individually.

Do-it-yourself furniture repair - wood kitchen restoration

What is decoupage?

Do-it-yourself kitchen decoupage in Provence style

Update a kitchen set with your own hands in the style of "hand-made" - quite modern and interesting solution. It is decoupage that is one of the most popular do-it-yourself decor options. Its meaning is to decorate furniture elements with improvised household items. The most commonly used paper, papier-mâché, fabric, glass, old wallpaper, various household trifles.

For do-it-yourself kitchen decoupage, decoupage cards are more suitable than napkins

When decorating facades in this style, it is important to properly pre-treat the surface. Wooden elements must be sanded, plastic must be thoroughly washed and degreased (with alcohol or solvent), metal elements must be completely freed from corrosion. Among the advantages of this method, it is worth highlighting its low cost and unlimited flight of fancy, which can be translated into reality.

Even a beginner can decorate boring facades of a headset or hide local damage with drawings created using the decoupage technique.

Molding and painting

You can turn a minimalist kitchen with solid facades into a classic one by gluing moldings or carved details on them, and then painting

Molding is a type of facade decoration with an overlay additional elements. The added elements are cut out of wood to fit the dimensions of the processed facade. You can do this both on your own and order the necessary parts from specialists. This method suitable for wooden surfaces, to which the new pattern can be adapted without much effort and narrow-profile tools.

An integral part of the molding is the subsequent painting of the facades of the product (or opening the surface with several layers of varnish). This way to give the finished environment a solid and uniform look is the most rational and affordable. Surfaces to be painted must first be sanded and thoroughly degreased.

Before painting the headset, wall cabinets can be completed with curly brackets

In this case, the restoration of not the entire kitchen set, but only its individual part, would be an excellent solution.

Sealing small scratches and potholes on the countertop is done with wood putty

To update the table cover, you should pay attention to the combination of wear resistance of the material and its combination with the rest of the room. Table tops look interesting. artificial stone, marble and granite. They cost more than chipboard products, but due to the much longer service life, these costs pay off quite quickly. Chipboard resists moisture and mechanical stress much worse than stone, which is a very important aspect for the kitchen.

Polishing the tabletop with a felt wheel

A simpler option is to tile or mosaic countertops (preferably in a color that matches the rest of the interior). This method is simpler, since it does not require dismantling the old countertop, as well as measuring and ordering a new one.

Increasingly popular are rattan inserts, the facade coating of which will also help transform the appearance of furniture into better side. Before cladding, measurements and cutting of the material are necessary, which is then attached to the facade using a construction stapler. Rattan can cover both the entire surface and only its middle. If necessary, the brackets can be closed with decorative strips. Before attaching the canvas, it must first be soaked in water.

Refurbished façade with rattan inserts

If there are no clearly expressed mechanical damages on the processed material, a variant with painting is possible. This method is great for facades, but not for work surfaces. You can paint in any convenient way, however, when working with a spray gun, the paint layer lays down more aesthetically than with a paint brush or roller.

Video: How to update an old kitchen

So let's update the kitchen! This room is one of the most used in any apartment or house. We are sure that in your kitchen there are also a couple of points that can be improved or refreshed.

1. How to update the kitchen: replace the doors

Hanging new doors on kitchen cabinets is an economical alternative to completely replacing furniture. The appearance of the kitchen will change beyond recognition if you change their color or texture. However, there is important point, especially for "older" kitchens: when hanging new doors, you often have to change fasteners, and this can weaken the design of the kitchen, lead to sagging and shorten the life of the entire set.

2. Paint the facades

This method will help to achieve the same strong effect as when replacing the doors, and there are fewer risks. Arm yourself with your favorite paint and update old doors. The spray can do better than the brush: there will be less streaks, it is easier to achieve an even coverage. If you want to use liquid paint left over from the last repair, it is best to apply it with a sponge in a dabbing motion. And don't forget to apply a couple of coats of varnish on top.

3. Install new handles

It's amazing what role such a small detail as a handle plays in the perception of the entire kitchen. While replacing them is simple and inexpensive. If you are repainting cabinets at the same time, you can repair and paint the old handle holes, then the choice of new parts will not be limited by anything. If you only change handles, you will have to find a similar format.

4. Cunning with the countertop

If the surface of your countertop is completely worn out or just already annoying you, you can replace it. However, if it is glued to the cabinets, it may be difficult for you to mask the damage from dismantling later. There is a simpler option and, if we are talking about a countertop made of natural materials, cheaper: invite a specialist home who will mount a thin layer of wood veneer or stone on top of your countertop.

5. Upgrade light

Buying new lamps or at least changing the lampshade from hanging lamp give a boost of novelty. Think original pendants, they look more elegant than just a hanging cord.

If your kitchen has only one common light source, you are guaranteed to add comfort and improve the atmosphere in the room by hanging a lamp above the work surface and a couple of sconces in the table area. If you don't want to hire an electrician to mount the fixtures on the wall, those that simply plug into a wall outlet will do.

6. Switch to energy efficient lighting

So much is said about it for a reason - they are more expensive than other light bulbs (although the price decreases over time), but at the same time they work for a very long time, are extremely energy efficient and you can’t get burned about them. Changing light bulbs is perhaps the easiest change you can make to your kitchen, but brighter light will do the trick. appearance and feel of space, and energy savings - on your budget. LEDs are sold with a wide variety of base types, so even built-in halogens can be easily replaced.

7. Paint the ceiling

Paint or re-whitewash the ceiling. Even if this is the only thing you will do to update the kitchen, you will be surprised how much lighter and brighter the surroundings will become. Kitchen ceilings are under a lot of pressure due to steam, smoke, dust and grease splashes, and you may not notice this until you compare the "before" and "after".

8. Update your kitchen apron
