The switch with indication the diode lamp flickers. Common causes. LED lamp device that makes LED lamps blink when off

The lamp blinks. What to do?

Today I will talk about one problem that is related to two things - fluorescent (LED) lamps and backlit switches.

Illuminated switches are really functional and convenient thing. There is no need to fumble in a dark corridor in search of a switch. In this case, a neon lamp or an LED in series with a resistor is used as an indication element. When the switch is off, the backlight lights up, and this can only mean one thing - current flows through the circuit.

Why is the off energy-saving lamp blinking

There were no problems until energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps(KLL) with an electronic ignition circuit. In such lamps, the power circuit is designed in such a way that even if one wire (usually a phase wire) is broken by a backlit switch, a charge can accumulate on the filter capacitor.

As a result, the voltage will increase so much that it is enough to start the circuit, and the lamp will momentarily light up. This manifests itself as periodic blinking of the energy-saving lamp after turning off. The same effect can be seen in LED lamps.

I will immediately make a reservation that blinking can occur not only because of the backlight, but also due to other reasons - poor wiring insulation, lamp malfunction, a very long wire from the switch to the lamp. For example, with an open phase wire along its entire length from the lamp to the switch contact, this wire is an antenna. And if the wire is long (20-30 or more meters), and another wire passes nearby, on which there is a phase, then a phase is induced on the hanging wire, the power of which is enough for flashes of fluorescent or led lamp.

Looking ahead, I’ll say that the recommended way to get rid of flashes will work great in this case, too, since its nature is the same - a weak potential comes to the phase wire, which slowly accumulates on the filter capacitor, and after a while the voltage on the capacitor (tens of volts) becomes enough to start the electronic ballast circuit.

An energy-saving lamp may or may not blink, depending on the specific lamp type and manufacturer. Recently, manufacturers have been modifying the lamp circuit to solve the problem described here.

How to fix the lamp flashing when the switch is off

To eliminate the flickering of the LED or energy saving light bulb (and fluorescent lamps with electronic ballast in general) usually offer several methods. Consider each in detail and choose the best.

1. Open necessarily phase the wire.

This must be done in any case. As a rule, this condition is met everywhere, with the possible exception of wiring in old houses. Why they did this is described in the article about. However, this rarely helps, since the cause of blinking lies elsewhere. Those who advise this should understand that in 90% such an alteration does not help. And the lamp continues to blink. But for this you need to redo the connections in junction box. And there is old aluminum 🙁

2. Just have a bite to eat or throw out the backlight in the switch.

This is not our method! Although the fastest and easiest. In most cases, they do. But then why install a backlit switch? By the way, there were cases when the switched-off lamp continued to blink even after biting out the backlight.

3. Lay a separate neutral wire in the switch to power the backlight.

The method is good and works flawlessly. There are downsides. First, an additional wire, which must be provided in advance. The second is that the backlight is constantly on, although this may not be significant. In addition, the additional insulated twist in the circuit breaker…

4. Parallel to the blinking fluorescent bulb, screw in an ordinary incandescent lamp.

The method works well, but it can only be applied when there is more than one light bulb in a lamp or chandelier, which is a significant drawback. This may be a temporary measure (although I have had it in my kitchen for over two years).

An energy-saving lamp in parallel with an incandescent bulb. By the way, you can see that the energy-saving lamp turned black near the base. If it works for 3 years - fine!

Let's consider this method in more detail. Despite a significant disadvantage, this method has advantages that eliminate (compensate) two disadvantages of energy-saving lamps.

First - energy-saving lamp turn-on delay. The light from such a lamp appears after a while, then the lamp flares up, and this becomes more noticeable with the aging of the lamp. This annoys a lot of people. The incandescent lamp turns on instantly and immediately reaches the nominal brightness level. There is a positive effect.

Second - not quite a pleasant color of the glow of an energy-saving lamp. With the addition of an incandescent lamp, the overall lighting spectrum becomes more familiar and pleasant. By the way, in the production of jewelry and other fine work, just such a combined method of lighting is used - the eyes get tired much less.

5. In parallel with the lamp, turn on a shunt element (resistor or capacitor), through which a current sufficient to light the backlight will flow.

Maybe this will be interesting too?

From a technical point of view, the method actually repeats that described in paragraph 4 - shunting a lamp with an incandescent lamp. It is suggested to use a capacitor or resistor. Capacitor ratings: capacitance from 0.01 to 1 μF (selected experimentally), voltage - not lower than 400 V. Resistor rating - resistance from 200 kOhm to 1 MΩ (also, depending on the specific situation).

The capacitor, compared with the resistor, has large dimensions and price. But it has another plus - it reduces the interference that fluorescent or light to the network. There are situations when the operation of such light bulbs disrupts the operation of “smart” devices at home. For example, .

Why such a spread in the resistance of the resistor shunting the lamp? The stronger the problem manifests itself (for example, nearby for a long distance passes in parallel force line, which additionally induces voltage), the less resistance should be.

In order for an energy-saving (and in general any fluorescent) lamp not to blink in the off state, it is necessary to connect a resistor with a resistance of 1 MΩ and a power of 0.5 W in parallel with it.

If an energy-saving or LED lamp flashes, connect such a resistor in parallel with the lamp

Resistance can be in the range from 100 kΩ to 1.5 MΩ and depends on specific conditions. Read more in the comments. The power of a resistor with a resistance of more than 510 kOhm can theoretically be less than 0.1 W, but in practice it is at least 0.5 W, and preferably 1 W. Power increases with decreasing resistance, and is calculated using the well-known formula:

P = U² / R

For example, if you have to install a 100 kΩ resistor, then its power dissipation will be 0.48 W, with a margin of 1 W. And if 10 kOhm - the power must be taken at least 5 watts.

Power is dimensions, and resistors with large dimensions have greater mechanical and electrical strength. The resistor must be insulated (it is better to place it in a PVC tube or heat shrink). It can be placed near the lamp socket or in a junction box.

The price of the issue is from 1 to 5 rubles (the cost of the resistor).

What do we end up with? If an off energy-saving lamp is flashing, the cheapest and easiest way to fix this is to connect a resistor in parallel with the lamp!

By the way, since the point is not in the design, but in particular, only compact, but also ordinary (long tubular) fluorescent lamps when using electronic ballast, and LED lamps are subject to this effect.

Using a pass switch

The science of blinking off lamps does not stand still). This is an update of the article from July 26, thanks for the hint to the reader Sergey. See his commentary on this article from .

When the lamp is off, the potential, due to which it tries to turn on, appears for two reasons (often these reasons are present simultaneously): 1) The potential appears due to the flow of the backlight supply current, 2) The potential appears due to interference from nearby current-carrying conductors.

Today I will tell you about how to get rid of "flickering LED lamps". And note, we will not talk about pulsation, the pulsation coefficient, which is very often, the so-called "experts, connoisseurs, etc.", constantly confused with blinking (blinking). But again, this is a problem for everyone who believes in such miracle experts. We, thanks to which you can quickly fix the flickering of LED lamps.

LED lamp device that makes LED lamps blink when off

Last year we already wrote about. In this article, we examined the main components and principles of lamp operation: despite the fact that the lamp is screwed into the network alternating current, works on a permanent basis. In the network we have a voltage of 220 volts, while the LED lamp needs much less voltage. An LED driver is used to step down the voltage and convert AC to DC. The driver input is equipped with a diode bridge (diode rectifier). An electrolytic capacitor is used to smooth out ripples. After this filter, the voltage is supplied to electronic circuit where the output voltage is converted and stabilized. This is in short. It is described in more detail in the article, the link to which was indicated above.

Flashing (flickering, blinking) of the LED lamp due to the backlight in the switch

The main reason for the blinking of the LED lamp is the presence of a backlight in the switch. When the switch is in the on state, current flows to the lamp through the contact system. If the switch is turned off, then the current will run through the indicator. After turning off, the indicator is connected in series with the load (in our case with LEDs) and there is a meager current consumption. Accordingly, the current runs not only through the indicator, but through the load.

passing through diode bridge driver, the current charges the filter capacitor. The voltage on it will increase. As soon as a value is reached that allows the stabilization circuit to work. current will go to the LEDs, and they will "blink, blink", thereby discharging the capacitor. After the process is repeated - charging, discharging the capacitor. The blinking frequency will depend on many factors - the driver, LEDs, diode power, etc.

We get rid of the blinking blinking of the LED lamp when the switch is off

So how to get rid of flickering in LED lamps? The answer is obvious))) Remove the backlight from the switch))) Simple and tasteful. But this is not always possible. Yes, and the indicator connection diagram can be an order of magnitude more complicated than I showed in the picture. What to do in this case?

If you have several lamps in a chandelier, then you can go the easy way - replace one of the LED lamps with a halogen or incandescent lamp. In the off state, the current flowing through these lamps will be much larger and not enough to charge the capacitor. Thus, the diode lamps will stop flashing. But let's just say - this is a radical method and not aesthetic.

If you have only one lamp, or do not want to replace diode lamps with incandescent lamps, then you should install a resistor with a resistance of at least 51 kOhm and at least 2 watts. The connection must be parallel to the lamp.

Parallel connection resistor

Do not forget that you need to isolate all the outputs well, because. 220v is no joke. This method is ideal if you have one lamp in the chandelier.

Another way is how to get rid of flashing, blinking or flickering of LED lamps if there is more than one lamp in the chandelier

To get rid of flashing (glow), you need to take a metallized polyethylene terraphthalate capacitor K-73-17 0.47 μF / 400V. There are other types of capacitors with the same parameters, but I can’t say anything about their effectiveness. The capacitor is not polarized.

We disassemble the lamp and solder the capacitor, as indicated in the photo. Just solder in parallel directly to the wires or to the board.

Silk from Saffron is a smart LED lamp that automatically adjusts its color temperature so that the lighting is fully suited to your daily biological rhythm.

Perhaps this fact is not obvious, but light has a huge impact on every aspect of your life, health and well-being. Your internal clock, or biological rhythm, is tuned and in sync with the light. Over millions of years, mankind has evolved to eventually establish a common internal clock regarding the movement of the sun.

Artificial lighting has allowed us to conquer darkness, but not without consequences - it can be a source of confusion in your daily clock.

To solve this problem, Silk Light is created, a smart LED lamp that changes the brightness and temperature of its light depending on the time of day.

The advantages of the novelty are obvious:

The new lamp uses only 14 watts of energy
Maximum brightness - 800 lumens
Adjustable light temperature: from 2700K to 6500K
Save over $16/year per bulb
In addition, a bridge is being created for the new lighting - an adapter with built-in Wi-Fi and an application for mobile phones that will allow you to control the brightness, lighting and lighting costs in the house.

What the prototype of the new lamp looks like can be seen below

Today energy-saving lamps are very popular due to their long service life and low electricity consumption. However, they are already fading into the background, as more and more consumers prefer LED lighting elements.

Of course, every person wants the device purchased for a lot of money to work smoothly and not bring any trouble. However, sometimes it happens that the light blinks when the light is off. What is it connected with? Is it possible to leave the lighting fixture unattended? Let's try to understand all these questions in the article.

Why is the most common reason

Such a malfunction usually occurs with many energy-saving and most LED lamps. It's all about their setup. The problem is that devices of this type operate on a voltage of 12 V. As you know, such a network is not provided in apartments. So that the products can operate from a 220 V network, voltage converters are built into the lamp bases. They consist of a capacitor that accumulates a charge, due to which “ignition” occurs, and the lamp begins to shine when the switch is pressed. Thus, the lighting device is not powered directly, but only with the help of a converter.

To understand why the LED lamp flashes when the light is off, it is necessary to consider the principle of operation of the switch itself.

The backlight turns on at the same time as a key is pressed, which consists of an LED and a low power resistor. When the light is off, the button “resets” the power supply circuit of the chandelier, however, a small current passes along this path. Its size is not enough to fully charge starting capacitor located in the light bulb converter. Through certain time some charge still accumulates, and the lamp “starts up”. But, the amount of energy is too small, so the lighting device flashes and instantly goes out, and everything repeats again. This most often explains why the LED lamp flashes when the light is off. However, there are many more reasons for this failure. They are quite common, so you should not exclude them.

Common Causes

We continue to consider the malfunction of lighting devices. To explain why the LED lamp flashes when the light is off, you should pay attention to possible reasons malfunctions. It's probably all about:

  • Improper installation and connection of the lighting system.
  • Industrial marriage. If you buy a very cheap Chinese light bulb, then you should not expect much from it.
  • LED backlight switch. An additional “flashlight” is often built into the key, which allows you to quickly find a light source in the dark. The problem is that this LED is powered from the same network as the chandelier itself, which can cause multiple repeated short circuits.
  • End of life of the LED lamp.

Perhaps this explains why the LED light is blinking. It is also worth considering less likely causes of failure. Such situations are the least common.

Possible reasons

The least likely answer to the question "Why does the LED lamp flash when off?" becomes one of these errors:

  • Any part in the device's microcircuit is damaged.
  • Network outages happened too often. Manufacturers are not responsible for excessive power surges. This happens extremely rarely, but if all the lighting fixtures constantly fail in the apartment, then this may be the problem.
  • The dimmer has failed. This device is used to smoothly change the brightness of the lighting in the room.

Some people are absolutely not annoyed if the LED lamp blinks when the light is off, others may not pay attention to it at all. However, do not underestimate these lighting elements.

Why you can not ignore the blinking lamp

If the device is used for lighting technical room, then it can not cause serious harm. In this case, you can leave everything as it is. However, if we are talking about a living room, then a blinking light can cause serious trouble.

The fact is that flicker is very harmful to vision. If the lamp blinks all the time in the room, then the eyes will get tired too quickly, and mental activity will eventually become inhibited. This is especially harmful for young children.

Also, repeated outbreaks can provoke an epileptic seizure in a person suffering from this serious ailment. Blinking lamps have a negative effect on animals, especially cats. Quadrupeds begin to behave more restlessly and may begin to show aggression.

Therefore, if the LED lamp blinks after turning off, the problem must be corrected. And do it as quickly as possible. It is also necessary to ensure that the blinking coefficient of the chandelier does not exceed 20%. To do this, it is enough to purchase a luxmeter.

The LED light is flashing: what to do?

The first way is to change the parameters of the backlight working circuit. There are two options for how it can be arranged:

  • Using a board on which a compact resistor and an LED are located.
  • When connecting a standard resistor and an LED element in parallel.

In the first case, it will take a very long time to mess around. It would be easier to just remove the board. In the second case, everything is much simpler. You can try changing the resistor by installing a more powerful one instead. This will reduce the current that comes out of the capacitor, so it simply will not accumulate.

When replacing a resistor, it is worth considering its power and type of lighting device. For LED elements, units with indicators of 470 or 680 kOhm are suitable.

Method 2

In this case, it is necessary to implement chandeliers and circuits with low resistance. Due to this, the currents passing through the backlight will not accumulate in the capacitor. Instead, they will follow the circuit and the lamp will stop flickering.

To do this, you need to purchase a resistor with a power of not more than 2 W and a nominal resistance of 50 kOhm. To make it easier to connect it, you need to solder conductors to its outputs. After that, the resistor must be isolated. To do this, you first need to heat shrink each solder point, then pull the heat shrink tube onto the resistor (the more, the better) and close the resistance case.

The prepared chain is connected in parallel to the lamp. It is recommended to use a junction box for this.

Method 3

Some people use a capacitor instead of a resistor. In this case, you need to purchase a device with a power of 400 V. The connection is made in the same way - in parallel. It is better to use a junction box.

This is a simpler and more effective solution that will help you adjust the operation of blinking lamps.

If insulation problems

If current leakage occurs, then this is a more serious problem. In this case, it is necessary to find the oxidized conductor, the contact pad and clean them. Also, you will have to solder the connections.

In some situations, the current may "leave" due to poor insulation, so you have to spend quite a lot of time looking for a leak. When there is a machine on the line, it is also constantly “knocked out”. If this happens, then most likely the problem lies in poor wiring. The easiest way to determine its "breakdown" is to use a multimeter.

Knowing why the LED lamp flashes when the light is off, you can solve the problem yourself. However, those who are on "you" with electricity are not recommended to experiment. It is better to call the master. An experienced specialist with the naked eye will determine what is the cause of the failure.
