Ways to grow roses

Growing roses seems to be a complicated process only at first glance. The main task is to choose a method of flower propagation that will correspond to the variety and group of the plant.

Growing roses is not as difficult as it seems at first glance.

Reproduction of roses is carried out in two main ways: vegetative and seed. Flowers that do not form seeds or do not transfer their properties and qualities when sown are propagated by the vegetative method. Vegetative reproduction in turn occurs in the following ways:

  • cuttings - propagation by cuttings from a bouquet, cut stems;
  • dividing the bushes by layering, offspring;
  • grafting or budding.

Type of rose seeds

The seed method is used for growing types of roses that produce full-fledged seeds, as well as when breeding a new variety or when cultivating wild rose for grafting as a rootstock. By "complete seeds" is meant seeds from which, when sown, a flower of the same quality as its predecessor grows.

Hybrids are not propagated by seeds. Descendants with this method grow unlike the parent. When non-hybrid varieties are propagated by seed, the offspring are similar to the original "wild varieties". The seed of miniature roses is more suitable for planting.

Few varieties are able to propagate by seed method. Among them are polyanthus, miniature rose, rose hips related to brown, needle, rose canina and others. One of the first roses offered for cultivation by seed in our country was the rose "wings of angels". Now you can buy seeds of various varieties, but you can grow flowers from seeds from your site or from other rose gardens.

Seed method of growing roses

Seeds are taken at the end of July or in August. The fruits at this time have a beautiful red or yellow color. It is necessary to select fruits with a slight blush. From unripe fruits, seeds germinate usually better than from ripe ones.

Carefully cut the skin of the fruit and divide it into two halves. Carefully remove the seeds, separating them from the pulp. Seeds, both purchased and from your site, can be different shapes. This shouldn't bother you. The shape of the seed will only affect the originality of the grown flower. Before sowing, the seed is sometimes soaked in growth stimulants (heteroauxin, root). This procedure activates the growth process, accelerates the release of the first shoots.

Seed stratification

Before a seed can be grown, it must go through a stratification process. Stratification is one of the methods of presowing seed preparation. This term means overlaying. The seed is layered with a moist substrate and stored at a certain temperature. Under natural conditions, seeds germinate only after lying in the ground under a snow layer during the winter. Thanks to the snow cover, the seed receives the optimum temperature and the necessary moisture. The same regime should be created artificially when growing roses of some species.

This will require a piece of cloth, paper towel or cotton pads. Soak the prepared material with peroxide, spread the seeds on top of it and cover with a moistened piece of cloth or a cotton pad. Coffee filters are also used; beaks are clearly visible against their dark background. The density of the filters does not allow germs to grow into the material.

Napkins with seeds are placed in plastic bags so that the peroxide does not evaporate. An inscription is made on each package with the name of the variety of the mother flower and the date of bookmarking for stratification. Packages are placed in the vegetable sector of the refrigerator, where the temperature must be maintained within +4 - +5°C.

Periodically, the seed must be checked for the presence of mold. When it appears, the material is replaced with a new one, also processed. With the normal development of the process, sprouts should appear in one and a half to two months.

Sowing seeds

Seeds that germinate before the expected time are immediately sown. For sowing seeds, use separate pots or peat tablets. During the cultivation of roses, the disease "black leg" sometimes appears. To protect against this disease, the surface must be mulched with a 1 cm layer of perlite. Constant monitoring of soil moisture is necessary.

Shoots appear on the 3-7th day. Some seedlings do not fall off the "cap" of the shell. It is recommended to drip drops of water on the shell to facilitate the process. From the moment of germination, sprouts need 10 hours of daylight for their normal development. Therefore, you can not do without additional lighting equipment.

The bud should appear in about two months. And after 3-5 weeks the first flowers will bloom. Plants need to be monitored. Water the seedlings regularly and apply soluble fertilizers in a strictly dosed manner.

Angel Wings - Chinese Rose Angel Wings: Tips for Care and Growing from Seed Angel wings are a type of Chinese rose or Chinese hibiscus. Variety - perennial is both a garden and potted plant. And he feels great in the weather conditions of Russia. Chinese rose Angel Wings (Angelwings) is not in vain received such a name. Her appearance answers him completely. A small shrub up to 20 cm tall. It has small neat leaves of rich bright green color, a thin but strong stem of the same green color. There can be a very large number of leaves, they can vary greatly in size. The most important thing is the flowers collected in inflorescences. On one bush there can be up to a hundred inflorescences. The flowers are most often white or pink, and all their shades. Petals can be double and smooth. As the whole plant grows, the number of petals increases, at the end of growth an elastic bud is formed. Angel wings are considered unpretentious plants, but if not proper care they die very quickly. This variety is grown from seed. There are usually a little more than ten in a package. Growing Sino Angel Wings roses from seeds is not an easy task. The seeds must be placed in a special substrate (sold in stores) to a depth of 5 mm, sprinkled with earth on top, slightly moistening it, and covered with glass. Glass can be occasionally removed to moisten the soil and saturate it with oxygen. You can make your own soil. Pour drainage at the bottom of the pot (for example, crushed polystyrene foam), pour a universal flower mixture, add sand, and a peat tablet on top, after soaking it in hot water. For greater confidence, before planting seeds, they can be soaked in water or a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 2 weeks. The first shoots should appear within 30 days. During the growth period and during the flowering period, you need to water abundantly (and if the flower is on open ground, and if the flower is in a pot at home). If the plant is in a pot, then you need to pour water into the pan, only a little water can be poured under the roots of the flower to moisten the top layer of soil. Stagnant water also has a bad effect on the flower, so it is better to pour out the remaining water from the pan. The topsoil must always be moist. The leaves must be sprayed. After flowering stops, when the leaves begin to fall off, watering should be stopped, only occasionally moistened with an earthen ball. Lighting, temperature Plants are very fond of light and heat. If the house has windows facing south, then it is better to put Angel Wings there. The same applies to the situation with open ground. For long and persistent flowering, flowers need 4-6 hours a day in the sun. The ideal temperature is from +24 to +30. If the temperature drops below +10, the plant will die. However, if the temperature is very high and the sun's rays are direct, then it is necessary to protect the roots of the rose from overheating. It is better to do this immediately upon planting, sprinkling the roots on top with an extra 2-3 cm of earth. Top dressing Hibiscus "Angelwings" must be fed. Any general purpose potted plant will do. This type of plant also needs magnesium. It is better to take magnesium in chelated form. You need to feed the flower in the morning, in a non-hot time, once a week. It is possible more often, but then the dose should be significantly reduced. Flowers grow very quickly, so you will need to stock up on a large number of pots. Young plants several times a year. As it grows, it is necessary to transplant into a pot with a large diameter. Adult plants are transplanted less often - once every few years. For a safe transplant, the earthen ball must be completely braided with the roots of the plant. After transplantation, at first, it is better to water the plant from a pallet. So the roots will cling to the new soil.

One type of Chinese rose, Angel Wings, has the Latin name Angel wings. It is currently cultivated all over the world. It is widely distributed in the subtropics and tropics, because this climate is the most suitable for this plant. The history of the appearance of the Angel Wings rose began several millennia ago in southern China, and in the 18th century it was brought to Europe.

Chinese rose flowers Angel Wings, collected in inflorescences. There can be up to 100 of them on a bush. They are mostly pink either white color. Petals are smooth and terry. As the plant grows, so will the petals. At the end of growth, an elastic bud is formed.

How to care for Angel Wings?

The Chinese rose is demanding on temperature, so in many countries, including Russia, it can die in winter when grown outdoors.

Temperature

The ideal temperature for the Chinese rose is +24°C ... +30°C. Rose roots need protection from overheating when exposed to direct sunlight. The plant dies at temperatures below +10 °C. Most often, the Chinese rose on the street lives only in summer, for wintering it is transferred inside the room.

Watering

During active growth and flowering, the plant is watered abundantly. If it is in a pot, then water is poured into the pan. You can pour a little under the roots to slightly moisten the topsoil. Stagnation of water adversely affects the rose. Its leaves are recommended to be sprayed. After it fades, and the leaves begin to fall off, the plant is not watered, only occasionally the ground is moistened.

Light

Chinese rose Angel Wings prefers warmth and light. Indoors, it must be placed on the south windows. For flowering to be long and abundant, it must be in the sun for 4-6 hours.

Priming

This flower grows well in airy and moderately moisture-intensive soil. You can buy ready-made soil or make it yourself by mixing:

  • peat substrate;
  • humus;
  • sand.

Important! Before planting a flower, the soil must be treated with a special agent that will prevent fungal or bacterial infections from developing.

pruning

Chinese rose pruning is done after flowering. Branches need to be removed:

  • dry;
  • damaged;
  • old.

Cut with a sharp pruner, which is pre-disinfected in alcohol. Places of cuts need to be processed with chopped activated carbon. Top dressing Feed the Chinese rose 1 time in 2 weeks, from March to July. The rest of the time it does not need to be fertilized. For top dressing, you can use any universal fertilizer intended for potted flowers. The procedure is performed in the morning.

Pot

Transplantation and wintering

Such a variety of Chinese rose as Angel Wings grows quickly, so it is transplanted several times a year. And each time they take a pot with a diameter larger than the previous one. In order for the transplant to proceed safely, the roots must be pulled out along with an earthen clod.

In autumn, often a Chinese rose is dug up and transferred until March into the room. with temperature + 3°С…+5 °С. If they decide to leave it on the street, then experienced flower growers advise bending the flower to the ground, wrapping it with dense non-woven material. From above, it is desirable to build a frame, insulated with hay or spruce branches.

Growing from seeds

  1. Before planting seeds in a ready-made or self-prepared substrate, they must be placed in water or a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 2 weeks.
  2. Then planting material is buried 5 mm into the ground, lightly sprinkled and watered, covered with glass on top.
  3. Every day the glass is removed so that the seeds are ventilated.

The first shoots will appear after a month. After the formation of 2-3 leaves, you need to make a pick. Basically, the Chinese rose of the Angel Wings variety is sown in February. If there is a desire to see a flowering plant in the spring, then this time for sowing seeds is considered the most successful.

Reproduction by cuttings

Although experienced flower growers mainly grow this flower from seeds, you can try to propagate it by cuttings.

  1. Cuttings are cut in the spring, using young, not stiff shoots.
  2. Then they must be put in water for the appearance of roots.
  3. When the cutting takes root, it is planted in the ground.

However, the fact is noted that plants grown from seeds are less whimsical.

Diseases and pests

The harm to the Chinese rose is caused by the spider mite. When this small insect covers the leaves with its almost imperceptible web, they:

  • turn yellow;
  • wither;
  • fly around.

It is because of him that such a disease as gray rot develops. For preventive purposes, the plant needs to be sprayed with water, but it is impossible for moisture to stagnate in the buds. It is necessary to cut dried buds in time. Spider mites die as a result of high humidity, so if the flower is thoroughly watered and then covered with a plastic bag for 3 days, the insects will die.

Aphids are another dangerous pest., especially if there is a large amount of it on the flower. As a result of their vital activity, the leaves turn yellow, curl and crumble. The plant wilts and stops flowering. You can get rid of washing the leaves cold water or by wiping with soapy water.

China Rose Angel Wings in Containment Breach, improper care suffers from such an unpleasant disease as leaf chlorosis. In this case, the shape of the leaves changes. They begin to twist, their surface is covered with dirty spots. Buds, not having time to bloom, fall off. In order to save the flower, it needs to be transplanted into fresh soil, fertilized with the necessary bait, and also spray the leaves well every day.

  1. There are many types of hibiscus similar to the Chinese rose Angel Wings. One of them is the Musk variety. This plant grows to a height of 1.5 m. It has a pink bark, the shape of the leaves is similar to the heart. The flowers are large, burgundy, bright.
  2. A very showy variety of Cooper is distinguished by variegated white-green leaves and bright red flowers.
  3. The variety King has double flowers painted in bright yellow. They are 15-17 cm in diameter.
  4. The Alicante variety does not stand out with attractive flowers, they have simple red petals. This plant is often found in hospitals, schools and offices.
  5. The Flamingo variety has simple pink flowers with an attractive dark red center. It is she who makes the flower unusually beautiful.

The Chinese rose Angel Wings, although it belongs to ordinary plants, blooms profusely and for a long time, which is what flower growers like. This flower is perennial plant. His bushes, with proper care, grow for more than 5 years.

All my friends grow about the same flowers on their windowsills. But I wanted something different, especially since my friends grow plants with good foliage (like spathiphyllum), i.e. intended for cultivation in partial shade. All my windows face east. So I needed something that would bloom in the sun.
And in the online store I saw the seeds of the Chinese rose "Angel Wings". And I thought it would be just great if I could grow something interesting from these seeds.
There were 7 seeds in the bag, which I planted in two pots. I covered it with a film and put it under the battery (it was in February). There was nothing for a month! I decided that everyone ... will not rise. But the soil was well moistened. After about 3 weeks, I saw one sprout in each pot. Then I was upset and happy at the same time. Because it’s a shame that the germination rate turned out to be so low (2 plants out of 7), but on the other hand, I wasn’t going to breed them! One plant would be enough for me.
And then they began to grow ... by the way, I will say that I planted a Chinese rose on the same day with strawberries and eggplants for seedlings (for summer cottages). And I was very surprised by the speed of development of roses! Because vegetables all at first throw out 2 cotyledons, and after a while the first true leaf appears. In the case of the Angel Wings rose, everything went wrong! Almost a day after I noticed the shoots, a real leaf appeared! Those. the seeds sat for a month, then they just flooded!
A week later I had neat bushes, and then I saw one more sprout in each pot. Those. I have 4 plants. And just recently got out the fifth. Those. the seedling rate is very slow, but the growth rate is wonderful!
The leaves of the roses are neat, carved and very pretty - they really resemble roses.
Let me remind you once again: I sowed the seeds in mid-February, and at the end of April my roses began to bloom! The first flowers did not turn out quite the same as the manufacturer promised. Indeed, judging by the packaging, “Angel Wings” bloom with double flowers (that is, when there are many, many petals layered one on top of the other). But I have only one such flower. I hope this is because the plants are still quite small.
The rest of the flowers are all five-petalled. But I also really like them.
Another interesting point: at the beginning of flowering, the flower may be more or less pink, but the closer to the end, the lighter it becomes. At the very end, the flower turns white (unless, of course, it was originally so). My first flower immediately opened white. But all the rest turned white already then. It was interesting to observe how on one plant there were flowers of two shades at once: bright pink and white.
The only negative is that my flowers fade very quickly: they are pleasing to the eye for only a couple of days, and then crumble. True, this applies to the five-petal. Terry keeps for almost a week. So I hope that over time, when the plants get stronger and mature, the flowering period will be longer.

Since August, watering is reduced and fertilizers are stopped. Leaves begin to fall in October. After all the leaves fall off, the roses are cleaned in a cool room with a temperature of 3 - 10 ° C. Watering is almost stopped, only occasionally moisten the land lump. In March, the rose ends its dormant period. It is transferred to the room, cut and transplanted, if necessary. After the plants begin to grow, resume regular and abundant watering, as well as top dressing. For abundant and lush flowering, it is recommended to pinch the first 2-3 buds. Rosa chinensis "ANGEL WINGS" (Chinese rose "Angel Wings") - charming beauty. Feels great both in the flower bed and in various containers. Compact bushes are strewn with beautiful semi-double and double flowers. Abundant flowering until frost. The variety is characterized by compactness and high winter hardiness.

Bloom: July-September.

Before sowing, the seeds are soaked for 6-8 hours in a growth stimulator solution. Seeds are planted in a pot with a moist substrate, pressed into the soil, and sprinkled with a thin layer of wet sand, slightly compacting it. The crops are sprayed with water from a spray bottle, the pot is placed in a plastic bag inflated with air, and placed in a room for two weeks, and then cleaned in a cold place (5-7 degrees) for stratification, which lasts 1-2 months. After that, the seed container is placed in a warmer and lighter place, with a temperature of 18-20°C, and the seeds are germinated for 30 days.
