National Research Nizhny Novgorod State University named after N. I. Lobachevsky (Lobachevsky University, UNN listen)) is the largest university in Nizhny Novgorod, one of the national research universities in Russia. It is one of the 21 Russian universities participating in the program of the Government of the Russian Federation to increase international competitiveness among the world's leading scientific and educational centers.

Short description[ | ]

It was opened on January 31 (January 17, old style), 1916, as the Nizhny Novgorod People's University. Between 1932 and 1990 it was called Gorky State University. In 2009 it received the status of the National Research University of Russia.

Includes 18 faculties and educational institutes, 132 departments, 6 research institutes.

Currently, about 30,000 students, over 1,000 graduate and doctoral students study at the university, 1,200 candidates and more than 450 doctors of science work. UNN is the third largest organization in Nizhny Novgorod in terms of the number of employees, behind the Gorky Automobile Plant and the Gorky Railway.

UNN's success has been awarded five QS Stars in education, graduate employment, innovation, and infrastructure. Among the first 15 Russian universities, UNN received a grant from the Government of the Russian Federation to increase international competitiveness and enter the leading world rankings (Project 5-100) .

Story [ | ]

In 1918 he was evacuated to Nizhny Novgorod. After the merger of this university with this institute and with the Higher Agricultural Courses, for the first time in the country it receives the status of a state university.

In 1921 there was a significant reduction in the number of faculties. On May 4, 1921, the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR issued a decree on the liquidation of all historical and philological faculties of the country and the organization of faculties of social sciences in their place. The number of teachers in 1922 is reduced from 239 to 156 people.

A year later, on November 11, 1931, the university was re-established, including 3 faculties: physics and mathematics, biology and chemistry. The building of the former theological seminary (now the building of the Faculty of Natural Geography of the Nizhny Novgorod State Pedagogical University on Minin and Pozharsky Square) became the educational and scientific base.

By 1932, the UNN had the following departments: physical, mechanical, zoological, botanical, chemical, and mathematical.

Since 1938, entrance exams were established and for the first time Gorky University conducted a recruitment of freshmen on a competitive basis.

On March 20, 1956, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Gorky State University was named after N. I. Lobachevsky.

Ratings [ | ]

UNN them. N.I. Lobachevsky is in the top 800 of the best universities in the world according to the QS World University Rankings 2016, in the top 300 of the prestigious THE BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2017, in the top 100 of the QS World University Rankings: BRICS 2016, occupies leading positions in many others international and Russian ratings. Also, Lobachevsky University for the first time entered the top 300 of the prestigious QS World University Rankings 2017 in Physics and Astronomy, taking a position in the range of 251-300. In other areas, the university is not included in the subject ranking.

Developments [ | ]

In October 2016, university representatives announced the development of unique ceramic materials for spacecraft that can withstand high temperatures and radiation, thus enabling interplanetary travel. UNN scientists are also implementing the Cyberheart and Cybertrainer projects.

The Cyberheart project involves the development of an intelligent software system for receiving, storing and analyzing cardiological data. Such a system will include a software package that allows for large-scale calculations that reproduce with high accuracy dynamic processes in the heart. At the same time, the device is able to receive reliable data on human cardiac activity in real time, as well as to simulate various effects (electrical, mechanical, optical and others), to test the effect of medicines. The development is able to recognize heart diseases based on the existing database.

"Cyberheart" has a graphical support system for data analysis in cardiology, a system for automatically developing methods for the possible treatment of specific patients, an ECG measurement system with sending results over a wireless network.

System "Cybertrainer" EOS (Electromyographic Optical System) is designed to monitor, visualize and correct human muscle activity. The complex consists of a suit with integrated myo-sensors. During physical activity, the sensor system takes information about the workload of the muscles of interest and projects the image onto augmented reality glasses. The system of tactile stimulation of individual muscles can correct movements in accordance with the recorded reference. Training even with a personal trainer does not reflect an objective picture of the work of human muscles.

Using the Cybertrainer suit, the athlete spends less time reaching the goal, significantly reducing the likelihood of injury. The Cybertrainer system will allow you to monitor the recovery processes of injured muscles, as well as prevent re-injury. The software allows you to set the maximum allowable tension level for each muscle, upon reaching which the system of vibration sensors signals the user about excessive load.
