Bench from broken chairs

On the site http://www.anoregoncottage.com I found a great way to save old broken chairs. From them you can make a completely incomparable country bench.

I think many people have such old chairs that are falling apart in the literal sense of the word. Of course, you can throw them away, or you can try to make something very interesting and convenient.

Step one: Find two identical chairs

  • Most suitable chairs that have a slight bend in the back. It is these backs that we need

Step Two: Creating the Seat

  • Assemble the frame as long as you see your bench and secure each end with two screws (as shown in the picture above). Use solid wood and long self-tapping screws, because our goal is to create a strong and durable structure.

Step Three: Creating the Bottom Shelf

  • Even after we have made the seat as secure as possible, the bench may still be too wobbly and unreliable. To solve this problem, we create additional element strength - bottom shelf

Step four: Putty and paint

  • We fill all the holes in the wood with a special putty, let it dry well, and then thoroughly sand all surfaces, paint with any suitable paint.

Step Five: Making the plywood seat

  • Cut off a piece of thick plywood of the required size
  • We cover the plywood with batting or foam rubber (its size should be slightly larger than that of the plywood sheet) and cover the seat with upholstery fabric. At this stage, a furniture stapler gun will be indispensable

Now we just have to decide whether to leave everything as it is or add a couple of pillows, because our bench is already ready!

Suppose you absolutely need a large amount of money, and getting a loan from a bank is problematic due to the impossibility of providing required documents. And what, a common thing, happens when there is no official place of work or the basic salary is paid "in an envelope." In this case, there is only one way out - to contact a company that can, and the entire package of documents will be executed not only promptly and competently, but also in the form that will guarantee the bank's consent to issue you a long-awaited loan.

1. Materials:
- two old wooden chairs;
- dye;
- water-based varnish;
- solvent for degreasing the surface;
- putty;
- sandpaper coarse and fine grit;
- self-tapping screws and nails;
- strong threads for the cover;
- furniture foam rubber 40 - 50 mm;
- furniture or any other fabric (you can use it).

2.Tools:
- rubber putty knife;
- brushes for applying varnish and paint;
- hammer;
- clamps;
- screwdriver;
- a sharp knife for cutting foam rubber, scissors;
- Sander(you can do without it);
- sewing machine.

Step 1: find material

So, we need a couple of unnecessary rickety grandmother's chairs, which are probably languishing in your garage or pantry. In any case, at the flea market you can find and purchase these for a penny.

In addition to chairs, prepare boards for the frame of the bench and plywood, from which we will make the base for the seat, as well as a shelf under it. The latter can be very functional.

Step 2: preparing materials

Start by sorting out the chairs. We need to disconnect back chair on which the back rests. Such backs will serve us as the sidewalls of the future garden bench.

Further, from the remnants that remained after disassembling the chairs or suitable bars of the required section, we assemble the frame of the product. We went on principle and used the remnants of old chairs, because in general they seemed to us still pretty good.
The base will be rectangular, of arbitrary length, but choose the optimal dimensions - such that the finished product has the strength necessary for intensive use.

Screw a sheet of plywood to the base.

Step 3: bench assembly

We connect the received details, forming a prototype of the future bench for giving. For additional strength, we arrange a strapping of rails at the bottom along the perimeter - just the one on which the shelf we conceived from the remaining plywood will lie.

Step 4: Take Care of the Aesthetics

Now you have the most important work ahead of you, on which the final result of all the work done will depend.

Thoroughly clean the bench from dirt and dust. Sand all surfaces, and if necessary, sharp corners and edges, giving them a slightly rounded look - first with coarse sandpaper, then with fine-grained sandpaper.

Fill cracks, joints and irregularities with a rubber spatula. Again, sand everything well. The process takes quite a lot of time and requires patience, however, believe me, the end result is worth it. All elements will acquire complete outlines and aesthetic appearance.

Treat the surface with a solvent and proceed to painting. Apply the first coat, let it dry completely, then sand so that the next coat of paint penetrates the previous one. Paint all the details a second time, wait for it to dry and apply a coat of varnish.

With varnish it is better to do the same as with paint - lightly sand and varnish again. Thus, you get a coating that is very resistant to external influences. And since the bench is supposed to be located on the street under a canopy, this will come in handy.

Step 5: finishing touch

Sew a pillow for sitting. To do this, cut a piece with a sharp knife furniture foam required size. Attaching to it a piece of furniture fabric, which is usually used for upholstering sofas, determine the size of the pillow cover, not forgetting to add a little for seam allowances.

In fact, buying furniture fabric is not necessary. You can use any other durable material, and not necessarily new.

Stitch the cover and sew a zipper into it on the side. In the future, this will make it easier for you to care for the pillow. Place the foam in the cover and place it on the seat. A pair of bright pillows will complete the ensemble.

So do not rush to get rid of it. Using your imagination and our tips, you can make a new set out of this furniture. In this homemade craft, we will tell you how to make an original bench out of old chairs. This option is not only convenient, but also very interesting. You can put such a bench in the courtyard of the house or in the country. The original bench will become an unusual piece of furniture.

For the manufacture of this homemade product you will need the following materials.

materials
Old chairs (4 pcs);
Band saw;
Jigsaw;
Drill and drill bits for wood;
Dowels (wooden);
Paint and varnish remover;
Joiner's glue;
Putty knife;
Varnish on wood;
Dye;
Brush;
boards;
Meter;
Marker;

Step 1.

You must first take two chairs and carefully remove the horizontal racks that are in front of the seat.

Step 2

Now we take the remaining chairs. With the help of a meter and a marker, you need to make a mark where the cut line will go. This line should be slightly lower than the front seat post. Take the saw and carefully cut the legs along the marked line.

Step 3

At this stage, it is necessary to remove the old varnish and paint from the chairs. To do this, apply a uniform layer of a special tool for this work. You are holding required time(it is specified by the manufacturer of the product). After the required period has elapsed, carefully remove the old coating. To facilitate the work, you can use a spatula, as well as sandpaper (fine-grained)

Step 4

Now you need to drill holes for the dowels in the racks from the front and end sides. First you need to make a mark with a marker where these holes will be. Then take a drill and drill holes.

Step 5

Take the dowels and insert them into the resulting holes. Before this, be sure to grease the dowels with glue (carpentry)

Step 6

After the dowels are firmly glued, it is necessary to assemble the future base of the bench. This must be done as shown in the photo below. All components of the bench are fastened together with self-tapping screws. After that, the entire surface of the bench is sanded again.

Step 7

On this stage we will make a bench seat. For this we need a board. The board should be adjusted to the size of the bench. It is necessary to mark the desired length, and cut off the rest. Back height is up to you.

Step 8

If you decide to make a seat from several boards, then they must be glued together with wood glue. After that, the entire structure should be clamped with clamps and wait until the entire structure is completely dry.

Step 9

Now you need to glue the seat to the base of the bench. Lubricate the base and the seat itself with wood glue. Put weights on the board, and also clamp it with clamps.

Step 10

Wait for complete drying. After that, take masking tape and paste over the surface of the seat with it. The remaining parts of the bench should be painted with special paint for wood.

Do you have a couple of unnecessary chairs that are idle? Today we will show you how to make a cool French-style bench out of them, which is ideal for decorating the interior.

On our balcony we found old, wooden chairs, which are about 50-60 years old. They had a soft seat and were made of thin wood. By the time we got down to business, they were already falling apart.

We named the bench French because we saw a similar bench from Ballard Designs. We also want to emphasize that this is not one of those benches that are made according to the principle of lining up chairs in a row, where plywood is later laid on them. After all, it looks a little strange, we will make a bench in a classic style.

If you still make such a bench, you will surely have your own thoughts and ideas on how to do it better. We will be glad to accept your advice and work. Send them to us by mail, we will be happy to share them on our website.

After looking at our chairs, we found that they were fake, although they looked like they were quite expensive. After that, they safely carried them to the farthest corner of the workshop, to await their fate. At that moment, we simply could not get rid of them. One fine day in May, one of our craftsmen suddenly began to make our bench without us. This is not like him, because usually we have to persuade him for a long time, to do something, of course, except for custom-made furniture, this is his direct responsibility. So, let's begin!

Step one: Find chairs.

We need to find two chairs that look good from the outside. If your chairs have a slight back angle, that will be fine. Such a back will create comfort and not very angular look. It is desirable that the seat of the chair be screwed with nuts and bolts to the main body. This will make it easier for us to attach the bench base to our chairs.

- Remove the front legs and seat. Our fake chairs were held together with glue, we easily ripped off the two front legs and removed the seat. Thus, we are left with two backs of the chair.

If the front legs on your chairs can be unscrewed, it is better to take advantage of this opportunity. If the legs are broken off, parts of the tree may remain sticking out.

Step two: Making an undivided seat.

- Make a rectangular frame. The length of the bench can be made any. It depends on how many people you plan to fit on it. We took materials for our frame in an old countertop from ikea. After the frame is ready, it must be fixed with screws, as shown in the figure above. Use strong screws to make the frame immovable.

- Fixing the frame. We drilled holes where the chair seats would fit if they weren't fake, and attached our frame. On each side, we made three holes, and screwed in three screws in order to evenly distribute the weight. A little lower, we drilled a couple more holes, and screwed in the future shelf for various things. Our goal is to make the bench safe to sit on, so don't skimp on the bolts, we ended up with 7 screws on each side.

Step three. Create the bottom shelf.

“Even after we attached the main frame to our bench, the structure was still quite wobbly. To avoid falling and breaking the bench, we decided to fasten the two sides with another wooden rectangle. We will use it as a shelf. Carefully measure the distance between the legs, and do not forget about main principle"Measure seven times, cut once." Do not repeat our mistakes, measure correctly.

- We nail the partitions. We didn't want our bench to look boxy or bulky. Instead of a sheet of plywood, which was originally supposed to be located on the bottom frame, we nailed 5 cross rails. Used for this ordinary, small carnations.

Step four. We skin and paint.

We remove all irregularities with sandpaper. After that, if there are empty gaps between the frames and the frame, fill them construction foam or plaster. After that, once again go through the sandpaper. If you leave the gaps unfilled, over time moisture will accumulate there and gradually destroy our bench from the inside. If you don’t have any plaster or foam on hand, just cover all these holes with paint.

Bench painting. We used spray paint, soft cream color. Apply three even coats and let dry.

The cost of a spray can of paint in Tashkent starts from 10 thousand soums. No more expense for a whole bench.

Step five. We make a seat.

To make a seat , we need a piece of plywood, chipboard, MDF or fiberboard. From this we will build the top of the bench.

- Upholstery seat. For soft filling, we used a synthetic winterizer. If you don't have one handy, you can pull out the cotton from old mattresses. There's plenty of it, it's quite suitable. Well, or the fastest and cheapest way is to buy a small piece of foam. It is sold in stores with furniture fittings or households. goods. It is necessary to lay out the filler on plywood so that there is about 1 centimeter of void around the perimeter. The material for covering the bench is also of your choice. We used a piece of an unnecessary sheet. Having covered our soft filler with a cloth, we wrapped the edges under the bottom of the bench, and attached it there with a stapler.

- Fasten the seat to the body. For mounting, we used an L-shaped bracket. Although normal bolts would hold up just fine, we decided to be on the safe side and use them.

Our bench is ready! All that remains for us is to decide whether the pillow will be located there or not. In an unusual environment for ourselves, with needles in our hands, we decided to try. Taking the remnants of the sheet that we had left from covering the bench and synthetic winterizer, we began to sew and fill our pillow. It turned out quite well, for people who have been making custom-made furniture for many years. Making such a bench will take you half a day, and maybe the whole day. If you have a desire to suddenly do something with your own hands, this bench is a great option to start with. In the yard of your own house or in the country, this piece of furniture will be not only useful, but also beautiful. And decorating it with decorative pillows, the bench will be an excellent tool for decorating a room or area.

I hope that your bench turned out to be as strong as ours. It does not stagger or even sway under a load of about 200kg. And if something went wrong, or simply there is not enough time, patience or strength, but you want to get such a bench. You can order it in the furniture to order section. And we will not tell anyone that you did not do it.

We believe that this is a great way to save old chairs and give them a second life. Send us your work by mail. We will be glad to show the world what you have done.

Do you want to decorate your backyard or summer cottage? You don't have to spend a lot of money to get it. garden furniture. From old chairs you can build beautiful benches yourself. Below are two options for such a life hack.

French style bench

You will need chairs that have a slight curve and an attractive appearance. Dismantle the front legs and "seats", observing the dimension in height and length. Build a rectangular box according to the chosen length and fix it with screws, as shown in the figure.

Distribute the mounting screws (three pieces) evenly to securely fasten the structure. At the bottom of the legs, also prepare holes for an additional shelf. The result is seven nests on each side.

To make the top smooth, use plastic or chipboard molds. Fill all prepared holes with special glue, sand the surfaces and apply a primer.

In the next step, paint the bench, the color can be chosen according to your preference. In our case, it is a creamy white shade.

For the last step, use an old batting blanket, taking its size a little over at the edges. After laying the material on plywood, tuck the free parts and grab them with a stapler.

To fix the upper part to the box, L-shaped brackets with screws are suitable.

Construction for the garden

Do you have a single tree on your property? Be sure to consider the next option. And if there are many suitable plants, you can organize a whole park for recreation. To create a comfortable garden bench, you will need six old chairs.

They need to be cleaned, sanded, and the seats removed.

Arrange the chairs in a circle, as shown in the picture, estimate the dimensions of the wooden planks that will be used as a seat.

Paint the structure in the selected color, having previously applied a primer, mount the structure around the tree, enjoy comfort and pleasant coolness on hot days.

When choosing a material, keep in mind that there should be no roughness on it, choose chairs of the same size, make sure that they stand securely and evenly on the surface.

Let's summarize
