    The lock mechanism interacts with several electrical circuits that combine the vehicle's electrical appliances into a single circuit. When we turn the key, voltage from the negative terminal of the battery is supplied to the ignition coil.

    Since the lock mechanism is regularly used by the driver, some of its elements wear out and fail. Sometimes it is enough just to splash WD-40 into the lock cylinder. However, the effect may not last long, and repair work will still be required in the near future.

    The simplest thing is to replace the faulty lock with a new one. The cost of this part for a VAZ 2106 car is low. You need to start the replacement with the process of removing the old mechanism.

    How to remove the lock


  • Be sure to remove the negative terminal from the battery. Some motorists do not do this, explaining this by low circuit voltage. However, if a wire short circuit occurs during repair work, this will lead to a malfunction of some electrical equipment.
  • Turn the key to the zero position. This will make it easier to dismantle the device due to the fact that the holding shaft of the steering wheel will slightly go into the secret part.
  • Remove the steering column cover. To do this, unscrew the five screws connecting the top and bottom of the casing. Pull the upper part of the casing up, acting very carefully. We remove and remove all the elements of the casing away.
  • After removing the casing, unscrew the screws on which the lock itself is fixed. There are two of these screws, they are located below the switch.
  • Disconnect the wires from the lock.
  • In order not to break the latch during dismantling, we find a small gap on the left of the bracket. We insert an awl or a thin nail into it and press the latch.
  • Use a slotted screwdriver to remove the mechanism from the bracket.
  • If the latch cannot be fully tightened, you need to turn the key slightly left and right at the same time, without turning it all the way. This will allow you to find a position in which the latch will be squeezed out completely, and the lock will easily come out. Please note that anti-theft can also interfere. She moves with the key. If you turn the key to the starter position, then it will take the most convenient position for removing the lock.

    Another important tip: mark how the wires were connected. This will help not to confuse anything when installing a new device.

    Replacing the contact group

    Sometimes there is no need to completely change the lock mechanism. It is enough just to change the contact group.

    It is located on the back of the mechanism. Attached to the body with a spring ring. You can try to remove it with your hands or with a screwdriver.

    We're filming the group. It consists of two plastic rings that have built-in current-carrying tracks. There is a spring inside the ring.

    Over time, carbon deposits form on these tracks, which leads to breakage. There is no point in messing with this soot. It's easier to buy a new group in the store. Its cost for the VAZ 2106 does not exceed 50 rubles.

    Please note that there are different models. On some, the starter contact is attached so that when the key is turned, this contact bends. This leads to quick breakdowns. It is better to choose a model on which the contact is rigidly installed.

    Installing a new part is easy. Alternately transfer the wires from the previous part, choosing the right contacts. Put the key in the zero position, turn the top of the group to the left until it stops and insert it into the lock. Make sure that the blade inside the body falls into a special groove. Snap and put on the spring ring.

    Installing the ignition switch

    After you have replaced the contact group or bought a new lock, you need to return it to its place. And you need to do it as correctly as possible. We offer the following sequence of actions that will help the ignition switch on the VAZ 2106 to be connected easily:


    After all the work has been done, you can connect the negative terminal to the battery and check the operation of the mechanism. Do not forget that when the ignition switch is being replaced, the VAZ must be disconnected from the power supply.

    Any driver, getting into his car to start the power plant, turns the ignition key. Such a simple action leads to the fact that the starter begins to receive electricity from the battery and it begins to rotate the crankshaft until the power unit starts.

    Such a seemingly insignificant detail as the ignition switch provides one of the most important actions for the successful start of the engine - it provides electricity to the car's on-board network. After all, in addition to the starter, the ignition lock provides power to the ignition system, instrumentation, light and sound alarm devices, etc. And after stopping, it completely de-energizes them.

    If we consider it in a simple way, then the ignition switch is an element that does not allow the battery to be discharged due to the constant supply of electricity to the on-board network, but ensures its presence only when the car is in operation. Thus, the battery retains its charge for a long time.

    Next, the scheme of the VAZ-2101 ignition lock, its main malfunctions, methods for their elimination, dismantling and installing a new lock on this car will be considered. This car was chosen because subsequent models belonging to the classic VAZ models, up to 2107, used identical ignition locks.

    Operating principle

    So, the ignition switch on the VAZ-2101 is an element located in the cabin near the steering column. The entire design of the lock is hidden under the decorative overlays of the column, so from the driver's side the lock looks like a large round washer with a slot in the center. Along the circle, you can observe marks - 0, I, II and III, each of which has its own effect.

    Label "0" - the position at which all electrical appliances powered by the lock are disconnected from the power supply. It should be noted that some of the equipment (interior lighting, brake light, cigarette lighter) do not depend on the position of the key in the lock, they are constantly powered by the battery. In this position, the key can be removed from the lock.

    Label "I" - the position of the lock, in which electricity is supplied to the on-board network. In this position, instrumentation, light and sound alarms and headlights, the ignition system and a number of other electrical appliances receive power. This position is fixed, and when transferring the key to it, it is not necessary to hold it.

    Mark "II" - the position at which voltage is supplied to the starter to start the engine. This position is not fixed, that is, the driver moves the key to this position and holds it to start the engine. After starting, the key is released, and it returns to the “I” position under the action of the spring.

    Position "III" - parking. In this position, all electrical appliances are de-energized, and a latch, which is an anti-theft vehicle, enters the groove of the steering column.

    It should be noted that the positions of the castle do not go one after the other. So, to move the key to positions "I" and "II", it must be rotated clockwise from "0". And to set position "III", the key is turned counterclockwise from "0".

    Ignition lock device

    The part of the lock hidden under the lining has the shape of a cylinder with a protrusion on the side, which is a lock of the anti-theft system.

    At the end of this case there are conclusions to which the wires are connected. There are six of these outputs, and each of them provides power to certain devices.

    Inside the case is the secret of the castle and the contact group. The secret ensures that the lock can only be controlled by a key that has a certain shape. This is another anti-theft tool, since only a certain key will allow you to switch positions.

    The contact group of the ignition lock 2101 is a special washer with leads for connecting wires. On the inside of it are the nickels of these conclusions, as well as the slider, which moves due to the effect of the secret on it. When moving to certain positions, this slider closes one or another dime, providing electricity to the conclusions that are connected to the closed dimes.

    Faults

    The design of the lock is quite simple and reliable, but the lock may well break. There are only two malfunctions that can happen to this element: mechanical and electrical.

    A mechanical problem refers to a problem with a secret. Due to the litter that gets inside the secret and moisture, corrosion is formed, which prevents moving elements inside the secret from moving. As a result, the lock starts to jam when the key is turned, wedged or stops rotating altogether. You can fix this malfunction by pouring WD-40 inside or at least brake fluid. However, to restore the working capacity of the secret in this way, if it succeeds, then not for long. The secret itself is not repairable, and with such a malfunction, the VAZ-2101 ignition switch will eventually need to be replaced.

    An electrical malfunction is the burning of the nickels of the contact group. Because of this, there will be no or insufficient contact between the runner and the nickel. Electrical appliances will not work on the car, there may be a lack of power supply to the starter. If the burning was insignificant, then you can try to restore the lock to working capacity by stripping the nickels with a diamond file, followed by wiping with alcohol or gasoline. But if the nickels are badly burnt out, then you will need to either change the contact group or the lock assembly.

    Removal and installation

    Dismantling this element from a car is quite simple and for this you need only a Phillips screwdriver and a thin flat screwdriver or an awl. Before starting work, be sure to disconnect the "negative" terminal from the battery.

    To get to the fastening of this element, you first need to unscrew the bolts securing the lower trim panel of the steering column, and then remove it.

    After that, you need to unscrew the two bolts that secure the lock, with which it is held in its seat. In the same seat there is a small technological hole. Inserting a thin screwdriver into this hole, you need to press the latch that holds the lock, and then push it out of the seat.

    Only after that already disconnect all the wires. On some models, the wiring going to the lock is assembled into a chip that is put on the lock contacts. Such a chip will greatly facilitate the installation of a new element, since such a VAZ-2101 ignition switch does not require a connection diagram.

    But there are also versions of the car in which the wiring is directly connected to the contacts, and when installing a new element with this type of wiring connection on the VAZ-2101, an ignition switch circuit will be required.

    If the lock changes as an assembly, then you can connect it to a new wiring, install it in place, fix it and cover it with a decorative panel.

    If only the contact group changes, then the removed lock is disassembled. The contact group is fixed with a retaining ring, which must be pryed off with an awl or screwdriver and removed. After that, you can remove the group. A new one is installed in its place, and fixed with the same retaining ring. After that, everything is put in place and the VAZ-2101 ignition switch is connected.

    Connection

    Now about the connection. If the wires are assembled into a chip, then there will be no difficulties - we correctly install the chip on the contacts and that's it.

    If each wire is connected separately, then you need to follow the diagram:

    • To conclusion 50 - red wire (responsible for the operation of the starter);
    • To conclusion 15 - blue with a black stripe (ignition, interior heating and other devices);
    • Conclusion 30 - pink wire;
    • Pin 30/1 - brown wire;
    • INT - black wire (dimensions and headlights);

    After connecting the wiring, everything is assembled, the terminal is connected to the battery and the performance is checked. First you need to check whether all electrical appliances powered by the lock are working. Then check the performance of the starter.

    If something does not work, you need to remove the lock and once again check the correct connection of the wiring, since the operation of the devices depends on this only when the key is turned.

    It is worth noting that on a VAZ 2106 car, breakdowns can equally be associated with both the mechanical elements of the part and the electronics.

    What damage can be in the ignition lock?

    The main causes of a malfunction of the ignition terminal:

    • Contact oxidation.
    • Partial or complete combustion of wires.

    When replacing, it is necessary to remember or draw the colors of each cable on the connection to the lock so that the circuit is at hand, or simply take a picture of the terminal on the phone.     The electronic block of the lock has the following contacts:

    15 - a double blue wire with a black stripe is connected to the contact.

    30 - pink wire. Responsible for turning on the starter.

    30/1 - brown wire.

    50 - purple or red. The color depends on the year of manufacture of the car. Additional circuit for starting the starter.

    INT - black wire with two contacts, responsible for supplying voltage from the positive terminal to the ignition lock.

    Replacing the ignition lock

    This procedure can be performed independently, if you have at least basic skills in working with tools, and be sure to observe. The ignition lock on a VAZ 2106 car is not too complicated, and the wiring diagram for all the wires is simple and clear. Therefore, self-replacement, without contacting a service center, is performed by many motorists.

    To repair, disconnect and connect, you will need:

    • plus screwdriver;
    • slotted screwdriver;
    • thin awl or small carnation.

    Many people know that a voltage of 12V is not scary for a person and is not afraid to get an electric shock. At the same time, they forget that electricity can affect not only the hand, but also the parts of the car. If, when trying to remove the lock, the wires are accidentally closed, this may lead to the failure of some of the electronic components of the machine.

    To replace, you need to take a large Phillips and a small socket screwdriver. First of all, the plastic casing of the steering wheel is dismantled. First, the lower bar is removed, then the upper one. After the casing is removed, all elements of the lock become accessible and can be removed.

    The second step is to disconnect the wires from the mechanical half of the device, after remembering the position of the terminals, because the pinout of the wires is important in this case. This was discussed above.

    After unscrewing the bolts of the lock itself with a small screwdriver, it is necessary to turn the car key to the “zero” position. Now the device should come out of the mount easily and without much effort.

    The next step is to unhook all the wires that fit the ignition switch. For those who fussed, the scheme was redrawn or photographed, while the rest can print a memo from this article. This will help them connect the part without too much trouble.

    Then we look for a small flat slot to the left of the part on the bracket and with an effort we stick an awl there to press the latch.

    Now you can pull the ignition lock out of the bracket by prying it with another screwdriver.

    Installing and connecting a new lock occurs in the reverse order. The main thing is to connect all the contacts correctly, remembering the connection diagram, otherwise you can burn the wires.

    Do not forget that the negative terminal of the battery must be disconnected during replacement.

    Ignition is necessary in order to start the car and lock the steering wheel. From long-term operation, this element or its group of contacts become unsuitable for further use, the car does not react to key turns in any way, the larva ceases to freely let the key into itself. Therefore, it becomes necessary to replace the lock in order to restore the car's performance.

    The lock mechanism is in contact with a large number of wires. They stretch to the battery, connect automotive electrical appliances into a single chain.     Now we insert the key and turn it to the zero position to turn off the anti-theft device that blocks the steering. At the same time, with a thin awl or a screwdriver, we press on the locking element, with which the lock is held in place:

    After completing these steps, pull the key to remove the lock mechanism from the bracket:

    To install a new lock, all operations should be carried out in reverse order.

    Wiring sequence

    If you are lucky, and there is a special chip to connect the lock, everything is simple. But if such an element is absent, then the wiring will have to be connected alternately. To do this, it is necessary to take the terminal block of the inserted lock so that one double-view terminal is located on the right and stands vertically. The black wire should go to the top of this terminal.


    Further work should be in the direction of the clock. The pink wire will be connected second, followed by blue, brown, and the red wire will complete the whole thing.
    It should be noted that there are numbers on the back block of the lock near the terminals, each of which corresponds to a specific wire.


    Note that the bottom zone of the double view terminal must remain empty. So the contacts are connected.

    Checking the results of work

    Having finished installing the lock, you need to make sure that all the elements in the car work without interruption. We connect the battery. If working correctly, at the moment the key is inserted into the zero position, the automotive systems must be de-energized. In the first position, power begins to flow to the system that controls the internal combustion engine, generator set, headlights, signals, washer and glass cleaner, lifts and control devices. After the transition to the second sector, the voltage is supplied to the systems listed above and the starter device is started. If the lock is installed and working correctly, then the anti-theft locking rod extends and retracts when the key is switched from the “zero” position to the first position and back.


    In a word, there are no difficulties in such work. All operations are performed by hand, without the help of car service specialists. Moreover, the price of an ignition lock for a VAZ 2106 is from twenty to thirty rubles, and you should not chase cheap fakes!

    The ignition lock on all models of the Zhiguli of the “classic” family, including the VAZ 2106, is completely similar in design. Therefore, the replacement procedure will be the same. To carry out work on replacing the lock, we need two screwdrivers:

    After the two bolts are completely unscrewed, it is necessary to turn the ignition key to position 0, that is, to turn off the power supply to all devices in the car. And on the left side, insert a thin screwdriver into the hole to press the latch. This is actually shown below:

    Now you can buy a new lock on the VAZ 2106, which costs about 350-400 rubles.

    Replacing is done in the reverse order, and there should not be any difficulties. The main thing is to connect all the wires correctly to the lock contacts.
