How to open a collection point for aluminum cans

Today, more and more soft drinks and beer are sold in aluminum cans and plastic bottles. There are quite objective reasons for this: aluminum cans are cheaper, weigh much less than a classic glass bottle, and you can return them in the same way and get money.

The business idea is very simple - organization of a collection point for aluminum cans from beer and drinks. The thing is that large enterprises processing non-ferrous metals are not at all interested in wasting money on accepting 3-5 kg. recyclables from private distributors; in addition, they are usually located somewhere in the suburbs or outside the city.

The next step is renting a room. A heated basement, preferably located in a walk-through area, is quite suitable. You will need the premises in any case, even if you decide organize a street collection point for aluminum cans- you will still need a place where you will sort and temporarily store the aluminum cans you receive. The room should be warm and have lighting. To work, you will need a scale designed to weigh at least 50 kg. It is also worth stocking up on bags for aluminum cans handed over to the collection point. You will need to find and establish relationships with major non-ferrous metal collection points. This is where you will hand over aluminum cans from your collection point.

Your aluminum can collection point does not require any special advertising; rumors about such sources of livelihood among your customers spread instantly. Who is your contingent? Homeless people, drinking citizens and just ordinary old pensioners. You can put up the simplest advertising leaflets somewhere near garbage containers, hot spots where the bulk of your contingent gathers. However, among your clients there will also be quite sane people, for example, elderly people with a modest pension. Normal sign with operating hours aluminum can collection point and acceptance prices will allow this category to find its way to your acceptance point.

To organize a collection point for cans, you will also need a small starting amount for purchases and settlements with distributors. On average, 1 can is bought for 20 kopecks. (the weight of a standard 0.5 liter jar is 15 g, jars with a volume of 0.33 - 13 g), in 1 kg there are on average about 70 jars, but keep in mind that in a ton there will be not 70 thousand, but somewhere around about 64 thousand, the rest of the weight will be eaten by the inevitable garbage in the form of leftover beer, bulls, labels, etc. A standard 50kg sugar bag can hold 4kg of crumpled cans.

And one more trick: bags with cans must be checked with a magnet, remember - aluminum is not magnetic. For what? It's simple - our people are cunning, they can easily stuff a filling made of heavier, but less expensive iron inside the bag. Anyway, when will you recycle cans, they will definitely check you with a magnet, iron will be detected - either they will wrap up the entire batch, or they will accept you at the price of ferrous metal, and this is completely different money.

Let's calculate the costs:
basement rent - 3000 rubles per month,
the salary of one receptionist is 8,000 rubles per month,
electronic scales – 3000 rubles,
plus renting a car to deliver the raw materials you have accepted to the processing point.

Payback. In a good location during the summer can collection point collects up to 3 tons of aluminum cans. In many cities there are specialized plants for processing aluminum scrap, where they buy 1 ton of cans for an average of 30,000 rubles. If there is no such enterprise in your locality, it doesn’t matter. There are large non-ferrous metal collection points operating everywhere, which will purchase aluminum cans from you in bulk.

Aluminum beer cans popular all over the world since the 60s of the last century. In the USA, almost 100% of beer is sold in aluminum cans, in Europe - about 50%.

Beer cans consumed in huge quantities and mainly in two types of containers: 0.33 and 0.50 liters. Large production volumes justify high-speed, high-precision production lines. In addition, these main sizes aluminum cans They have the same diameter, use the same lids and differ only in height.

A huge advantage of aluminum cans over their main competitor - glass - is the ability to completely recycle aluminum cans after their use into new aluminum cans.

In the last decade, a competitor to the aluminum can has been gaining popularity - the aluminum bottle.

Aluminum can in Russia.

There are currently 2 can manufacturers operating in Russia: Rusal Rostar (2 plants - Rostar in Dmitrov, Moscow region and Rostar-Vsevolozhsk in Vsevolozhsk, Leningrad region) and Rexam (1 plant in Naro-Fominsk, Moscow region). The share of imported supplies of cans is about 5%. Today, the production capacity of the Rostar plant in Dmitrov allows the production of 1.3 billion cans of 0.33 and 0.5 liters and 3 billion caps per year.

Rexam's cans sell such popular drinks as Coca Cola, Red Bull, Pepsi, and Heineken. But this is only a small part of the company’s partners, since the plant’s products are extremely in demand due to their convenience and environmental friendliness. Since the launch of production, ten billion aluminum cans with a variety of colorful labels have already rolled off its conveyors; every day, 50 cars loaded with containers leave the factory gates in different directions.

At the Rostar-Vsevolozhsk plant, the total capacity of the plant is 1.7 billion 0.5 liter cans per year. (150 million cans per month).

The volume occupied by aluminum cans in the total mass of solid waste is up to 5%.
60,000 cans = 1000 kg.
The weight of one can is 17 g.

As expected, the main market share is occupied by packaged beer: 42% comes from beer in PET, 24% from beer in a glass bottle and 18% aluminum can. Draft beer takes up no more than 16% of the volume of the entire category.

Production of aluminum cans.

Aluminum strips for can bodies and lids are supplied to can manufacturers. As a result of the aluminum can production process, about 20% of the aluminum strip (or 13% of the original melt) is returned to the ingot manufacturer in the form of production waste - the remains of sheets with holes in place of the cut blanks for can bodies and lids. In general, about 55% of the amount of the initial melt in the mixer goes into internal, production scrap. If all cans were returned as aluminum scrap, then to close the cycle of recycling old aluminum cans into new ones, only aluminum losses from waste would need to be replenished - just a few percent.

A modern jar with a capacity of 0.5 liters (body, lid, eyelet-opener) weighs 15 g.

The main requirement for beer can materials is their ability to be molded with large plastic deformations and resistance to corrosion.

Parts of beer cans are made of aluminum-magnesium alloys. For the body, 0.30 mm thick strips of aluminum alloy 3004 or 3104 in H19 condition are used.

For the lids, varnished tape made of aluminum alloy 5182 in the H48 state, 0.26 mm thick, is used, and for the manufacture of “ears” - keys for opening - a tape made of aluminum alloy 5042 in the H18 state, 0.45 mm thick.

Recycling scrap aluminum cans into new cans is considered a great example of a nearly waste-free production process. Exactly recycling scrap aluminum cans played a major role in the explosive growth of the aluminum cans market for beer and soda.

Aluminum can: details.

Beer cans(and carbonated drinks too) must withstand internal excess pressure of up to 6 atmospheres. Therefore, they have a thick dome-shaped bottom and rather thin walls, which, however, with the help of internal pressure, provide the jar with sufficient structural strength. The general appearance of a typical beer can and the purpose of its various elements is shown in Figure 1.

Aluminum beer can dimensions.

There is a regulatory document GOST R 51756-2001 “Deep-drawn aluminum cans with easy-to-open lids.” According to it, the main parameters and dimensions of aluminum beer cans are as follows (with an accuracy of 1 mm).
The height of a can with a capacity of 0.33 l is 115 mm.
The height of a 0.05 l can is 168 mm.
The diameter of the bottom of the jar is 66 mm.
Cover diameter - 59 mm.

The wall thickness of a beer can.

The body of an aluminum can is made by drawing the so-called “cup” from a flat round blank in two passes. Then the walls of this cup are thinned by successive rolling to a thickness of only one third of the original (Figure 2). The bottom of the can is profiled in a special way not only to withstand high internal pressure, but also to fit well with the lid of the underlying aluminum can - for ease of packing.

The wall of the can is rolled out until thickness 0.110 mm almost the entire height. In the upper part of the can body the wall is thicker and the thickness of the beer can in this place is 0.16 mm. This is necessary both for the convenience of forming a narrowed “neck” and for creating a strong connection with the lid. Aluminum can lids are supplied separately and are installed on the body using the famous "double lock" seam immediately after filling the can with beer or other drink (Figure 3).

The thickness data, sorry, is from 1994 and is “slightly” outdated. Now, the minimum wall thickness has already reached 0.08 mm.

Waste paper - 3.5 rub./kg

There are many waste paper recycling plants in Russia. They receive the bulk of their raw materials in the form of scraps from paper mills and cardboard boxes from supermarkets. But they can also accept ordinary waste paper, which is generated in our home. You can donate old newspapers and magazines, notebooks, boxes of porridge and pasta, toothpaste, etc. To quickly accumulate a large volume, you can go around your neighbors in the hallway: many people have a stack of unnecessary magazines at home.

Plastic bottles - 8 rub./kg

Many people think that sorted plastic waste is recycled only in Europe. This is wrong. There are also bottle recycling factories in Russia. Plastic comes to them from sorting stations that operate at many landfills in the country. Polyester fiber is obtained from bottles, which is then used to produce fabrics and padding polyester. To ensure that bottles take up less space when stored at home, you can crush them with your hands - this will reduce their volume by 2-3 times.

Aluminum cans - 50 rub./kg

Soda and beer cans are one of the most expensive types of recyclable materials. Therefore, processing plants receive the bulk of their volume from collection points that specialize exclusively in aluminum. As a rule, raw materials are brought there by street cleaners who select cans from the garbage chute, or by homeless people who collect them from city trash bins. To reduce the volume, empty cans can be crushed with your foot, so they will take up 5 times less space.

Glass bottles - 2.5 rub./kg

In Russia, they practically do not use reusable packaging, therefore. But glass waste continues to be recycled in the form of cullet. Broken glass is used in the production of glass wool and other building materials. Glass bottles and jars are the cheapest and most difficult type of recyclable material to store and transport. Glass packaging is very heavy and cannot be crushed to reduce volume.

Where to donate and how to get 1000 rubles

To get 1000 rubles, you need to collect only 25 kg of aluminum cans or 285 kg of waste paper, 125 kg of plastic bottles, 400 kg of glass bottles and jars. You can store collected recyclables on the balcony or in the garage. If you collect more than 500 kg of recyclable materials, then processing companies take care of the delivery. You can find reception points on a special map. It contains information on 25 cities of Russia. Before you start collecting raw materials, you must call the collection point you have chosen and clarify the price and collection rules.

Figure 2

Beer can lid

The beginning of the rapid growth in the popularity of aluminum beer cans dates back to 1964, at a time when a lid was invented that could be opened without any weapons by simply turning a special “ear” (Figure 4). This eyelet is installed on the lid using a so-called integral rivet (Figure 5). It is called integral because it is formed from the metal of the lid.

Opening an aluminum can

The task of the petal and ear (it is also called a “tongue”) is to achieve a pop of escaping carbon dioxide when hardening on the ear of about 3 kilograms and completely pushing the petal (tongue) inside the jar when hardening up to 7 kilograms, and the petal must remain hanging in the jars.

This is achieved by making special notches along the perimeter of the petal of such a depth that only 0.085 mm of metal remains near the rivet and 0.110 mm on the opposite side (Figure 6). At the same time, the material on the notches is strong enough so as not to collapse during the technological process or during unloading in the store.

It is possible to notice another, internal sequence of notches in the petal. They are not as deep and are said to help direct the flow of metal on the main notches and prevent the main notches from tearing as they are formed.

Beer can weight

Aluminum beer cans are getting lighter every year. A modern 0.5 liter empty can - body, lid and opening mechanisms for an aluminum can - weighs about 15 g.

3 aluminum alloy beer cans

The main requirement for beer can materials is their ability to be molded with enormous plastic deformations. Aluminum alloys are ideal in this sense. In addition, beer can lids have a serious tendency to break predictably along the notches.

Aluminum does this much better than steel. Another good thing is that both the body and the cover are aluminum, which minimizes any possible galvanic effects that could lead to accelerated corrosion.

Can Body - Parts 3004 and 3104

Beer can alloys are made from aluminum-manganese and aluminum-magnesium alloys (table). For the can body, 0.30 mm thick strips of aluminum alloy 3004 or its modification - aluminum alloy 3104 - in H19 condition are used.

Can lid - alloys 5182 and 5042

For the lids, varnished tape made of aluminum alloy 5182 in the H48 state, 0.26 mm thick, is used, and in order to “make the thickness” of the keys for easy opening, a tape made of aluminum alloy 5042 in the H18 state, 0.45 mm thick, is used.

Where do they accept aluminum cans and how much do they pay for them? An aluminum can is one of the most popular types of containers. Most often they are used to store drinks. Such cans are resistant to organic acids contained in carbonated drinks and at the same time weigh very little. We’ll tell you which banks accept processing for processing and under what conditions, and is there an opportunity to make money on this?

Types of aluminum cans

The idea of selling aluminum cans and earning a little money comes to many people. Many people are concerned about environmental issues: aluminum can be reused, saving resources and minimizing harm to the environment. The popularity of aluminum containers is very high; it is valued for its lightness, resistance to organic acids, ability to quickly cool and retain cold. All aluminum cans are made from approximately the same compositions: alloys 3004, 3104, 5042 and 5182.

There are several approaches to classifying aluminum cans. The most commonly used is related to volume and weight:

  • 0.33 liters;
  • 0.5 liters;
  • 1 liter.

How much does an aluminum can weigh? The weight of an aluminum can with a volume of 0.33 liters is 13 grams, 0.5 liters is 15 grams, 1 liter is 29 grams.

Manufacturers of aluminum cans try to produce them with as thin walls as possible. This approach saves resources and simplifies cargo transportation. The standard wall thickness is only 0.110 mm, the lid and bottom are slightly thicker - 0.16 mm and 0.3 mm, respectively. The height of the container is regulated by GOST: 0.33 liters - 11.5 cm, and 0.5 - 16.8 cm.

Also, cans can be divided according to purpose, for example, for beer, carbonated drinks and iced coffee. The shape of aluminum containers is most often standard cylindrical, although some manufacturers are experimenting with the appearance of their products. Manipulations with design are most often associated with the desire to give the 0.33 liter jar a more “voluminous” appearance.

You can donate aluminum cans of any shape, size and in any condition.

Which banks are suitable for change?

The scrap metal collection point (aluminum is a metal) accepts any aluminum container. Shape, condition, volume are not of fundamental importance, but they affect the cost. Most points accept only clean cans, and some ask you to sort the containers according to their intended purpose (beer cans separately, soda separately).

A modern way to accept aluminum cans is through special machines (fandomats). Unfortunately, they are not yet widespread in all cities; they are usually installed in shopping centers. The main requirement is the presence of an intact barcode on the bank.

Where to donate aluminum cans

Cans of beer and lemonade are accepted most scrap metal collection points. However, many of them do not accept cans individually: their weight is too small and it is inconvenient to pay by a few kopecks/rubles. If there is a metal processing plant in the region, you can hand over aluminum containers there (most likely, there is a collection point there). Some companies offer scrap metal removal from the client’s premises and clean and sort the raw materials themselves. But such services require the client to have a large batch of aluminum, on average from 50 kg.

An alternative method to hand over jars is fandom. This is a special machine that accepts cans individually and pays for each separately. Such devices require a barcode, but otherwise do not limit the condition or capacity of the container in any way. Fandomates are installed only in some cities of Russia, but most likely, their number will grow in the near future.

Admission conditions

Each scrap metal collection point sets its own conditions for accepting aluminum from the population. Most require containers to be returned clean and sorted by category (for beer, for soda). Many people do not accept cans individually, but are only willing to pay for a batch of raw materials over a certain weight.

As a rule, only clean and sorted aluminum cans are accepted.

However, there are also collection places on the market that pay for any cans, even damaged and dirty ones. They clean and sort them themselves. For citizens who want to earn extra money from aluminum waste, they seem to be the most promising option, although they pay quite little (less than for clean containers).

A modern way to hand over aluminum containers is to use a fandomat

Prices at reception points

You won’t be able to earn a lot by selling aluminum containers. One clean, whole jar brings the owner an average of 10 kopecks. Large receivers are ready to pick up shipments over 100 kilograms, and the price for 1 kg will be approximately 45 rubles. The price increases for clean, sorted and compressed raw materials.

Each company has its own terms of admission and prices. The general pattern is this: the higher the price of reception, the more demands are made on the condition of the container. On average, if there is no desire and opportunity to engage in sorting, pressing aluminum before delivery should rely only on small private collection points and a price of 15-20 rubles per kilogram.
