Do-it-yourself installation of interior latches. We select and install latches on interior doors

Do you want to have your own space and be sure that no one will break into it? Then installing a lock on an interior door is the only right decision for you. You can do it yourself without resorting to outside help. It is only important to choose the right accessories. It must be of high quality, match the interior in shape, color and design.

Choosing a lock for an interior door

By function and design, there are several types of door locks:

  • conventional latch or latch lock;
  • latch with lock;
  • mortise;
  • magnetic;
  • overhead;
  • latch;
  • latch;
  • level.

This is the most primitive type of lock, which is used in almost all interior doors. It is a simple design, consisting of a cylinder and a plastic or metal tongue. Often such a mechanism is mounted together with a handle that controls the tongue.

Latch - the simplest mechanism installed on interior doors

The purpose of the latch is to keep the door closed. The conventional latch is simple, reliable in operation, characterized by a wide choice of designs. However, due to the overly simple mechanism, it has not found wide application.

Latch with lock. It is considered a variation of the conventional latch, which is equipped with an additional latch. It blocks the movement of the handle. There are two types: lever and push-button. The first type is more practical, reliable. A push-button lock is no worse, but with it there can be such an unpleasant situation as accidentally slamming a door.

The latch with a latch has a number of advantages: simple installation, simple design, a wide range of models. The disadvantage of this lock is a weak locking mechanism.

When buying a product, pay attention to the fact that the movements of the tongue are smooth and whether the spring returns it to the inside of the door.

The people called him a mechanism with a larva for a key. Outwardly, it looks like a lock for street doors, but has a simpler design. The structure of the device includes a cylinder and a lock block.

Mortise locks are reliable and durable

The cylinder is of two types: "key-key" and key-revolver. The first is installed if the lock is used occasionally. The second, on the contrary, is suitable for more frequent use.

Mortise locks close bedrooms, offices, pantries. They reliably protect against penetration, are durable, rarely break. If we talk about the disadvantages of the device, then this includes the complexity of installation and the dependence of the parameters of the device on the thickness of the door.

If you can afford to fork out, then this type of castle is for you. It is intended primarily for rooms in which it should be as quiet as possible: bedrooms, children's rooms, offices.

The magnetic lock is silent, but its cost is quite high

Silent operation is ensured by its design, consisting of a crossbar, striker, magnet, magnet case. The bolt is attracted to the striker with a magnet, which is located on the box.

Along with the advantages of the product, there are disadvantages. Firstly, it is the impressive cost of the castle. Secondly, the lock case is not very compact in size, which makes it look bulky.

Rim lock. Products of this type can rightfully be called a rarity. However, despite this, the demand for it to this day does not fall due to the simplicity of the mechanism and simple installation.

Current models boast a comfortable body. The device is mounted on the inside or outside of the door, thus providing protection against unexpected entry.

The original purpose of the lock was to secure one of the wings of double doors. Currently, it is installed mainly in the bathroom, toilet.

Espagnolette installed in bathrooms

The principle of operation of this product is so simple that even a small child can handle it. Its installation does not require special knowledge and experience.

Latch. This is the simplest type of castle. A latch is a metal plate with a retractable lever. It is placed as a main or auxiliary lock.

The mechanism is widely used due to the high degree of reliability and protection. It is used for both street and interior doors.

To fix the bolt in the mechanism, plates (levers) with grooves of various shapes are used.

The lever lock has a high degree of protection

The corresponding key bit profile is suitable for each insert. The lock will open only when the levers are in the correct position and the groove is free for the passage of the bolt.

If you have made your choice in favor of a stylish but simple lock, you can get to work.

Tools and materials

To install the mechanism, you will need the following materials:

  • handles of any shape (round, in the shape of the letter "G") - 2 pieces;
  • cylinder mechanism with a spring;
  • fastening screws that connect the cylinder mechanisms;
  • crossbars;
  • sockets for closing cylinder devices - 2 pieces.

In addition to materials, a small set of tools is needed for work:

  • simple pencil;
  • roulette;
  • drill;
  • office knife;
  • chisels 0.1 and 0.2 cm;
  • feather drill 2.3 cm;
  • drill 0.2 cm;
  • a crown of 5.4 or 5 cm based on the thickness of the door;
  • masking tape;
  • hammer.

If one of the listed tools is not at home, you will have to buy it. Their cost is low, and they are always useful on the farm.

Lock installation

Putting the mechanism on your own will not be difficult. You just need to forget about the rush, be careful enough. The success of the case depends on many factors, including the type of door.

The easiest way is to insert the lock into a wooden canvas. It will be more difficult with an MDF product, since skills and knowledge are already required here. Therefore, in this case, it is better not to take risks, but to call the master of his craft for help..

Otherwise, poor work will result in damage to the mechanism, which will require repair or even a complete replacement of the product.

Preparatory stage

Marking is the initial stage on the way to installing a lock. The first thing to do is to prevent possible damage to the door.

The lock is mounted at a distance of about 1 m from the floor

To this end, measure the distance on the canvas 0.9 - 1.1 m from the floor covering - this is the location of the lock. Then stick masking tape on the end and surface of the door in that place. Such a procedure will not only protect your product from scratches, but also facilitate the application of measurements.

The pattern comes with a lock. It allows you to make unmistakable marks indicating the position of the holes. To do this, fold the stencil along the fold line and attach to the end. Then, with a self-tapping screw, mark the centers of the holes on the end and on the flat surface of the canvas.

Selection of holes for the handle and lock mechanism

After marking, take on the following steps:

Cutting a lock with a milling cutter

A milling cutter is a small vertical machine. It is quite easy to use, so even a beginner can manage it. To embed a lock using a machine into an interior door with your own hands, you must:

  • Put the canvas perpendicular on its side and fix it with a slipway.
  • Measure and mark the tongue.
  • Attach the lock to the sash so that the marked line runs clearly in the middle of the recess made under the tongue. Circle the body of the product with a pencil, as well as the bar along the upper and lower borders.
  • Draw straight lines on the end of the canvas. Use a square if necessary.
  • Select the opening for the lock with the machine.
  • Change the cutter in the machine, based on the dimensions of the bar, and adjust the depth required for its thickness. Make a notch in the center.
  • Make a nest for the lock case. To do this, drive the machine in the middle of the markup in a straight line.
  • On the resulting line, drill holes with a drill. The wood that remains is removed with a hammer and chisel.

The opening for the lock can be made with a milling cutter

Thus, an opening for the castle turned out. To check if everything is done correctly, insert the device into the seat.

Mortise lock without cutter

The absence of a cutter is not a reason to postpone the installation of the lock until better times. For installation, the most common tools that can be found in any home are suitable.

Although it should be noted that there are cases when it is impossible to cope without a professional machine. For example, installing a lock with a latch.

Insert mechanism with larva

Sometimes the lock is mounted on a door that already has a handle. It is for such situations that mechanisms with a larva are designed. They have the shape of a rectangle, so this work will seem overwhelming for a self-taught master.

Locks with a larva are mounted in a door with an installed handle

However, you do not need tools and skills. Only by trying, you will learn how easy it is to insert a lock with a larva into a wooden door.

To do this, find a place for the lock (above the handle or below it) and take on the following items:

  • On the end, draw a center line where the mechanism is mounted.
  • Attach the lock and make marks indicating the height of the product.
  • Drill holes along the center line with a small distance between them.
  • Use a drill to remove the jumpers between the holes and make a neat nest that matches the size of the lock.
  • Place the mechanism in the resulting opening, fix it with self-tapping screws. With an office knife, mark and cut the perimeter of the lock plate to approximately the same thickness as the lock plate itself.
  • Remove the mechanism and make a hole for the device with chisels.
  • Attach the lock to a flat surface of the canvas and mark the location of the larva. Then circle the larva along the contour. Do the same on the back of the door.
  • Drill a hole for the larva. In order for the device to enter freely, you need to go a little beyond the marking contours.
  • Put the lock and screw it with self-tapping screws, the holes for which had to be made in advance.
  • Fix the larva and check how the mechanism functions. Put on it with the help of self-tapping screws lining as a decor.

Installing the counterpart of the lock

This is the final moment of mounting the lock mechanism. To install the counterpart, follow these steps:

  1. Close the door and draw two lines on the opening, the distance between which corresponds to the size of the latch.
  2. Measure how far the start of the latch is from the corner of the door.
  3. Measure exactly the same distance on the opening - this is the beginning of the recess.
  4. If you are going to drown the counterpart in the jamb, then set it in place and circle the inner and outer contours with a pencil. If not, then outline only the inner one.
  5. Before installing the answer, make a recess under the tongue and self-tapping screws with a tool.
  6. Install the counterpart and close the doors. If excess play occurs, eliminate it by bending the tongue on the answer.

The reciprocal part of the lock is fixed with self-tapping screws

Thus, you have come to the finish line. Installing a new lock or replacing an old one is not a very difficult process, but it requires accuracy. When changing the previous mechanism, make sure once again that it is advisable to reinstall. After all, the problem can sometimes be solved by simply adjusting the device.

Interroom doors are equipped with latches. These are doors to rooms, kitchen, living room or bath. Rooms that require the latch to be fixed in the closed state are equipped with a device with an additional locking mechanism. How is it different from simple latches and how to install it?

What is an additional locking mechanism?

Additional locking mechanism - these are locking mechanisms that are activated only from the side of the room. No key is used to actuate them, usually they are executed in the form of a small rotating element, which is actuated.

latch tongue

Such devices are installed on the entrance metal doors in various forms:

  • overhead locks with one-sided use;
  • doviators;
  • castles-crabs.

The idea of the purpose of additional locking has probably already developed. The mechanism leaves the door closed on one side, regardless of the main locking mechanism.

So, for example, interior doors are equipped with a latch that opens on both sides. If the entrance to the living room or kitchen, then it should work, privacy is not required for these rooms. But the room doors or to the bath or toilet are closed from the inside to exclude the possibility of unpleasant situations.

For this, the canvases are not equipped with locks, they are equipped with the same mechanisms as on other doors of the premises, but with one characteristic feature. They have an additional locking mechanism that will not allow the latch to open. If it is fixed from the inside by this mechanism, then the handle does not fully function, a certain obstacle arises.

Elements that actuate additional locks are installed on the handle, if these are knobs, or on the bar, this option is typical for push-fitting types of fittings.

Based on this, it turns out that the hidden mechanism in the case will not change the installation method. Therefore, they install such latches with an additional function, as well as simple ones.

Types of latches

Latches are installed on swing doors. They are a simple type of locking mechanism. Sliding structures have a different type of fittings.

The main feature is the ability to lock the canvas without using a key. For entrance doors, its functional feature adds convenience when forgetting to close the door behind you. Latches allow you to keep them closed. It also brings certain problems if you leave, forgetting the keys, and slam it shut. To get inside, you will have to call a specialist or learn how to break the lock mechanisms.

There are the following types of door latches:

  • magnetic. This type keeps the door closed even if it is not self-locking;

Magnetic latch
  • fake. They are made in an oblique shape with a spring tongue;
  • roller. The design has rotating rollers on springs;
  • sliding are presented as latches and locking bolts;
  • electromechanical. These are controlled by remote or programmed keys, as well as the introduction of a code.

The first three representatives are found on the interior and entrance doors, including those facing the courtyard. Sliding elements are typical for the entrance doors of apartments and offices. Electromechanical latch control is found on driveways and gates to the yard.

When using latches in interior doors, accidental drafts and swinging of doors, movement of the leaf due to skew and improper installation of the door structure, spontaneous opening and slamming, which cause mechanical damage to the entire structure, are prevented.

Additional locking mechanisms close the room from the inside when necessary. For example, you can latch-only lock your front door without using the main lock when you are at home.

How to install latches with an additional locking mechanism

To make a correct installation, you will need certain skills in using the following tools:

Tools
  • construction square;
  • pencil or marker;
  • crown with a tail for wood;
  • centering drill with a diameter of about 5 cm;
  • bit;
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • drill with a diameter of 4 mm for wood;
  • electric drill.

Armed with these tools, they begin to mount the part on the door leaf. Installing the device using these tools means that it has never been installed on the canvas. Specialists perform such operations, even on the door installed on the box, very quickly. But for beginners, it is better to prepare the canvas for inserting the lock mechanism by installing it in place.

  • Install the door frame on the opening. At the same time, make sure that it is strictly in a rectangular shape. This is necessary so that the door is installed with the same clearance.
  • Mark the locations of the hinges.
  • After the hinges are installed, check the size and symmetry of the gaps and the tightness of the closing of the door leaf.

This carries out the preparatory work that is necessary in order to install the latch accurately with the correct web configuration. The next step is to install the latch.

Attention! The location of the handle from the bottom of the canvas should be at a distance of 1 meter. Although the fittings are installed, taking into account the physical characteristics of a particular person.

Cheap doors are made from MDF. They are reinforced with timber. For such doors, it is advised to use a mortise lock installed at a height of 1 m. This is necessary in certain cases to cut the door from below for ventilation of the room or final height adjustment. How to install a door latch with an additional locking mechanism.

  • The mechanism comes with a paper template. It is applied to the end side of the canvas at a height of 1 meter and at a distance of 7 cm from the edge. The depth depends on the latch type.
  • Close the door and make a through hole. This is done with a wood crown using a center drill.

Drill bit
  • Next, a hole is prepared for the locking mechanism. Marking is carried out by eye. To do this, match the tongue of the handle and the end of the door leaf.

Preparation of recess for the locking mechanism
  • A pen is inserted into the prepared hole, and the size of the sample under the lock bar is marked with a pencil. With the help of a chisel and a hammer, the wood is removed to the required depth. After that, the handle is fixed to the screws that come with the accessories in the kit.
  • Knobs have parts from the inside and outside, which are connected with protection screws. After that, a decorative ring is mounted using a spring mechanism.
  • The door closes, the latch will leave marks on the door frame, along which the counterpart is installed.
  • Following the traces of the latch tongue, a place is marked for sampling with a pen drill. If necessary, correct the broken parts with a chisel.
  • After the place is ready on the door frame for installing the latch tabs, a couple of millimeters of wood are removed so that the bar is even with the door frame. Then it is screwed on with screws.

Push handle with latch

After performing the above steps, we can assume that the latch has been successfully installed. Remove the remains of wood shavings and check the operation of the fittings. Details should not interfere with the tight closing of the door, locks should work without jamming and lapping of parts with each other.

The sequence of actions is much simpler if you want to replace the old latch with a new one. If there is a feeling that the operation is beyond your strength, then it is better to use the services of professional carpenters.

Any person has to periodically face the need to do something for the first time in his life. If you have decided to install latch handles in the interior doors of your apartment, but have never done anything like this before, at first glance, you may get the feeling that it is not easy to do it yourself, and it is better to resort to the help of a specialist. However, in fact, the technology for installing a latch handle on an interior door is quite simple, the main thing is to follow the instructions. If you have all the necessary tools at home (a square, an awl, a pencil, a drill with a drill bit and a crown with a diameter of 50 mm, a hammer, a chisel, a screwdriver or a screwdriver, a marker), then the process of installing a latch door handle will take you no more than one and a half hours.

Handles with latches can be conditionally divided into three types:
1) simple handles without a latch - used in rooms that do not need to be locked either from the inside or from the outside;
2) handles with a latch, that is, a mechanism that allows you to lock the door while inside the room;
3) latch handles with a key connector on the outside and a latch on the inside, that is, with the ability to lock the door both from the inside and from the outside.

According to the type of mechanism, the latch handles are divided into latch handles and handles-knobs (knobs). Fall handles look like a lever and include a push mechanism that is actuated at the moment the lever is pressed (usually from top to bottom). Knob handles have a round or spherical shape and a rotary mechanism that performs its functions when the handle is rotated.

As a rule, in stores and building supermarkets, door latch handles are sold complete with all the necessary parts, a special key, as well as installation instructions and a door leaf marking scheme with all dimensions.

The very process of installing a latch handle on an interior door is almost the same for all handle options, regardless of the features of their device and the mechanisms used in its design. Consider the process of mounting the latch handle in more detail.

First of all, you need to markup - using the template scheme available in the kit, or on your own. Having determined the height of the door handle that is comfortable for you (usually 90-100 cm from the floor surface), you need to make an appropriate mark with a simple pencil on the door leaf. The center of the future hole for the handle should be at a distance of 60 mm from the edge of the door, this point should be noted. Then the markup should be transferred to the end of the door - usually a square is used for this, which allows you to draw a pencil line strictly perpendicular to the edge of the door. At the end of the door leaf, strictly in the middle, it is necessary to mark the center of the drawn line with an awl. It is not necessary to make a mark on the other side of the door leaf at a distance of 60 mm from the edge, but it is still recommended for the convenience of further work.

The next step is to make holes for the handle in the interior door leaf. In total, you should end up with three holes - one at the end of the door and two - on the outside and inside, respectively. To make a hole in the end part, you will need a drill with a pen drill, using which you should drill a hole with a diameter of 23-24 mm at the end of the door leaf. Next, proceed to drilling the remaining two holes. To do this, you need to install a crown with a diameter of 50 mm on the drill. It is important to consider that in order to preserve the coating of the door leaf, it makes sense to drill a hole for the latch handle on each side separately, because if you drill one through hole using a drill on only one side, there is a risk of damage to the coating when the drill exits to the opposite side of the leaf. After completing this step, you should have three neat holes in the interior door leaf.

Now we move on to installing the latch mechanism itself in the door. Having placed the mechanism in the hole on the end of the door leaf, you should carefully trace the front cover on the end of the door along the contour with a simple pencil. Then we remove the mechanism and, using a hammer and a chisel, carefully make a groove on the end of the door along the outlined contour in accordance with the thickness of the front lining. As a result, the overlay should be located in the same plane with the end of the leaf, not protruding outward, but not "drowning" in the thickness of the door, that is, it must be installed flush. When this goal is achieved, it remains only to mark, attach the bar, and drill holes for the screws in the end of the door, with which the lining will be attached to the canvas - the holes should be slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of the screws, and screw the latch mechanism with the lining to the door using screwdriver or screwdriver.

Then you need to install the actual handles in the door leaf. To do this, on one side, insert an overlay with a square-shaped rod into the latch mechanism, making sure that the rod itself and the screw bushings enter the corresponding holes in the latch. After that, you need to disassemble the second part using a special key (it is also included in the latch handle kit), namely, press the internal latch located on the side of the handle, and then remove the decorative trim with the same key. Now we install the inner lining on the square rod installed on the other side of the door leaf, after which both parts of the structure must be firmly tightened using the fixing screws, also supplied with the latch. Next, attach the removed decorative trim to the hole and insert the handle into the hole. There are two options for inserting, depending on the shape of the latch - if it is beveled, then during the installation of the second handle on the door you will hear a click, which means that the mechanism is in place. If the shape of the latch is not beveled, then for the final fixation of the handle, it should be pressed.

And the last step in installing the latch door handle will be mounting the striker on the door frame canvas. To indicate a specific place where the “tongue” of the latch will touch the jamb, you can, for example, mark the tip of the “tongue” with a washable marker, then close and open the door 2-3 times, leaving a “tongue” mark on the door frame. In this place, it will be necessary to drill an appropriate recess, then attach the reciprocal bar to the resulting hole and circle it with a pencil. Similarly to making a groove at the end of the door, with a hammer and a chisel we make a groove for the reciprocal bar so that it also stands flush with the surface of the jamb. After that, using an awl, it is necessary to mark the places where the holes for the screws will be, drill them, observing the same rule as in the case of the end of the door - the diameter of the holes should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws themselves. Then, using a screwdriver or a screwdriver, we fasten the striker to the door frame and enjoy the results of the work done.

If a lock is an indispensable element of fittings for an entrance door, then it is rarely installed on interior structures. To ensure that the door can be closed and prevent access to the room, a latch is usually installed. Depending on the type of locking mechanism used, doors can only be locked in the closed position or blocked and restrict access to the room. Such structures can be installed both on interior doors and on gates, in office, industrial and other premises.

The device and purpose of the door latch

Modern latches differ in appearance, size and design. Despite this, they all have one purpose - to hold the door leaf in a closed but unlocked position. Some models of latches have a latch that allows you to block the doors from the inside, after which access to the room from the outside will be impossible. Such devices are usually installed at the entrance to the bathroom or toilet, but they can be mounted on any other door.

The door latch keeps the canvas in the closed position

The latch allows you to securely fix the door leaf in the closed position. This is true, for example, when a door separates a heated and unheated room and it is necessary to keep the heat in the house. Through tightly closed doors, extraneous noise will not penetrate into the room. If the room has air conditioning, then for its effective operation in the summer it is also necessary that the door be closed.

If a draft occurs, the door leaf can open abruptly and injure a child or even an adult. The presence of a latch on it allows you to securely fix the doors, so this possibility will be completely excluded.

A quality door latch should have the following characteristics:

  • reliable fixation of the canvas in the closed position. It should not open from a draft or a light touch on the door;
  • noiselessness. When the locking device is in operation, there should be no loud clicks;
  • uninterrupted work. The mechanism must work reliably and not break, so you need to choose devices designed for the maximum number of work cycles.

Features of choice

There are different types of door latches. Depending on the model and type, they may consist of the following components:

Modern door latches are classified according to several criteria:

  1. Mechanism type:
    • magnetic, file or roller. Such valves are usually installed on interior doors;
    • sliding - installed at the entrance to the house, apartment, office;
    • electromechanical or electromagnetic - mounted on gates, entrances to the entrance of the house or on the doors of protected objects.
  2. Installation method:
  3. Availability of additional functions:

Among the advantages of door latches it should be noted:

  • simplicity of design;
  • Ease of use;
  • long service life;
  • reliable fixation of the door leaf in the closed position, which allows to provide heat and sound insulation of the room.

There are practically no serious shortcomings in such devices. Its main disadvantages:

  • some models, when the tongue hits the reciprocal part, make a loud click, which can create a certain inconvenience;
  • with prolonged use of such fittings, scratches and grooves remain on the reciprocal plate, which spoils its appearance.

Types of door latches

Let's take a closer look at each type of door latch:

  1. Fallen. In order to close the door with a latch latch, it is necessary to apply a certain force, in which the beveled tongue slides along the reciprocal plate and snaps into place, fixing the door leaf. If such a device is correctly installed, then it will be possible to open the door only after pressing the handle or turning the key. Handles can be installed on one side of the door only or on both sides. Latch latches can be equipped with two locks: one opens with a handle, and the second is independent and works like a latch. The handles of such mechanisms perform not only their direct purpose, but also decorate the doors, so they must match the interior of the room.

    The latch has a bevelled tongue

  2. Roller. In this case, a rotating roller or tongue, beveled on both sides, acts as a crossbar. Such a latch can be placed both on the door leaf and on the box. When the door closes, the spring-loaded roller enters the hole in the striker and secures the leaf in the closed position. The roller latch can be installed as a separate device or work as part of a lock on both swing and pendulum doors. It is not connected with the handle or other locking bolts on the lock. It will not work to fully close the door with a roller latch, since when you press on it with a certain force, it will open.

    For roller latches, a rotating roller usually acts as a bolt

  3. Magnetic. The principle of operation of such devices is based on the property of a magnet to attract metal parts. Magnetic latches are often used both in residential areas and in offices. They allow you to fix the sash in the closed position, and it requires little effort to open it. One part of such a device is fixed at the end of the leaf, and the other - on the door frame. After the door is closed, the magnet is attracted to the metal striker and the canvas fixes the door in the closed position. There are simple models that are similar to those that are installed on furniture, only they have a greater pulling force. Some modifications of magnetic latches have a bolt that retracts into a hole on the counterpart. This latch can only be opened with a rotary or push handle.

    The operation of a magnetic latch is based on the property of a magnet to attract metal objects.

  4. Retractable. In this case, the developers combined the functions of a lock and a latch in one device. Such devices do not have a handle, so they can be opened from the inside with a turntable or from the outside with a key. Almost all such models have a latch, which, if necessary, allows you to hide the spring-loaded bolt in the latch body. When it is hidden and locked, spontaneous closing of the mechanism is excluded, but in this case the door will not be fixed in the closed position and may open at any time.

    The sliding latch can only be opened with a handle, some models can be opened with a key

  5. Electromechanical and electromagnetic. Such devices allow you to remotely close and open doors, so they are usually installed on gates or at the entrances to protected premises. For electromagnetic devices, it is necessary to additionally install an autonomous power supply. This is due to the fact that in the absence of power supply they are in an open state. There are the following types of latches:
    • normally open. When the power is turned off, these latches are in the open position. They are usually installed on emergency exits, as well as on access doors. In the event of an emergency when there was a power outage, people can safely leave the premises;

      In the absence of power, the normally open latch is in the open state.

    • normally closed. In the absence of electricity, such latches are in the closed position. This allows you to ensure the safety of the premises in the event of a power failure. In such cases, you can open the latch from the inside with a handle, and from the outside - with a key;

      Without voltage, the latch is in the closed position

    • with locking function. When power is applied, the latch is unlocked and remains in this position until the door is opened once. After the tongue has been drawn into the body, it is fixed there with the help of special pins and can be held at any time until the door is used.

Installing door latches

If you have elementary carpentry skills, even a beginner will not have problems installing a latch on an interior door. To install such a device, you will need the following tools:

The installation process of the mortise latch consists of the following steps:

  1. Installation height selection. For ease of use and ensuring good fixation of the canvas, it is recommended to install door latches at a height of 80 to 110 cm - it all depends on the height of the residents.
  2. Door leaf marking. At a previously determined height, the location of the latch is marked, after which it is applied to the end of the door and circled with a pencil. If the device has a handle, then on both sides of the canvas mark the places where it will be installed.

    A latch is applied to the end of the door and the place of its installation is marked.

  3. Hole preparation. At the end of the door inside the marked contour, holes of the required depth are drilled with a drill. After that, they level it using a chisel and a hammer. Also make a hole for attaching the handle. If there is a milling cutter, then this work is done easier and faster. To prevent chipping, holes for the handle are drilled on both sides of the door so that the drill comes in about half the thickness of the leaf.

    Drill holes for mounting the latch and handle

  4. Preparing a place for the latch bar. Check whether the mechanism enters the prepared hole. If not, then the niche is slightly expanded with a hammer and chisel. After that, insert the latch into the prepared groove and circle its overlay with a pencil. The device is pulled out and a small indentation is made so that the latch bar becomes level with the end of the door.

    With the help of a chisel and a hammer, recesses are made for mounting the latch bar

  5. Latch installation. Install the latch in the prepared place and fix it with self-tapping screws. To make the screws easier to screw in and not lick their heads, experts recommend first making holes for them with a thin drill. If the latch has a handle, then insert a four-sided pin, put handles on it and fix them, and then mount the decorative lining.

  6. Reciprocal installation. In order to accurately determine the location of the striker on the door frame, it is necessary to lubricate the tongue with toothpaste and close the doors. A trace will remain on the frame, to which the counterpart is applied and the place of its attachment is marked. Using a hammer and a chisel on the frame, prepare a recess for the tongue and fix the reciprocal bar.

How to disassemble a door latch

Sometimes it becomes necessary to disassemble the door latch. This may be required when:

  • there was a creak or jamming during the operation of the mechanism;
  • it is necessary to lubricate and clean the locking device;
  • it is necessary to change the failed parts;
  • decided to completely replace the latch.

Depending on the type of latch installed, the sequence of work may vary slightly. The procedure for disassembling a mechanism equipped with a push or rotary knob will be as follows:

After that, the reasons that led to the failure of the latch are established:

At the long-awaited final stage of repair, interior doors are being installed in the apartment. In most cases, there is simply no need to use locking locks for such doors. Therefore, latches crash into the door leaf. The article will talk about the design features and installation of door latches with a latch.

Features and varieties

Devices with a latch for interior doors according to the type of installation are external and mortise. Latches of the first type are much easier to install, assemble and disassemble if necessary. The downside is that they significantly spoil the appearance of the door leaf. Therefore, mortise locking mechanisms are in greatest demand.

Such latches for interior doors are presented on the market in a large assortment. Depending on the wishes and purpose, you can easily choose the optimal type of fixing device. According to the principle of operation and design features, mortise door latches are divided into several groups.

Magnetic

The door fixing device consists of two parts: a metal plate and a magnetic element. The magnet and the plate are placed on the side of the door leaf and on the jamb. The principle of operation of such a latch is very simple: when closing, the magnet attracts a metal element, thereby holding the door in a fixed closed position. To open doors with a magnetic locking element, a fixed handle is used.

The second type of clamps of this type are models where the magnet is made in the form of a movable tongue. The advantage of such a latch is that it is almost silent. Its characteristics such as smooth operation, long service life are also very in demand and convenient.

Falevye

Such a mortise mechanism has a movable retractable tongue with contours beveled at an angle. A plate with a groove is attached to the jamb. When closing, the tongue enters the groove and fixes the position of the door. Opening occurs when pressing on the movable handle, which leads to the extension of the tongue from the groove, releasing the door leaf from fixation.

Roller

Instead of a tongue, these latches use a spring-loaded roller. When closing, it enters a small recess and prevents the door from opening. Such latches can be driven by a fixed handle with some force. There are also models that open when you press the handle-lever.

Typically, mechanisms of this type are installed on the door to the bathroom or bathroom. Their feature is that they are equipped with a special blocking element. When the block key is turned, the latch stops opening when the door movable handle is pressed. Thus, the room is protected from unwanted penetration for a certain time.

How to choose?

To purchase a quality fixing device for an interior door, attention should be paid to the following criteria.

  • The quality of the latch is indicated by the smoothness of operation. During opening and closing, there should be no jamming or clicking.
  • It is best to choose a device with medium hardness springs. Weak springs can eventually stop holding the door leaf, especially if it is quite heavy. And mechanisms with tight springs will require effort to open the door.
  • Carefully inspect the product and evaluate its appearance. There must be no scratches, cracks, chips, traces of chemical damage, rust, paint defects on the body and parts.
  • Tactile perception is also important. The handle should be pleasant to the touch, comfortable to lie in the hand.
  • Try to find the specifications that best suit the operating conditions. For example, if the door leaf is very heavy and massive, you should choose a latch made of extra strong materials. Details of the locking mechanism can be found in the product data sheet.
  • It is best if the handles and latches in the apartment or house are made in the same style. It is also important that this element matches the design of the doors. Interior designers do not recommend putting latches, handles and hinges of different colors.
  • Decide on the function that the locking mechanism will have to perform. For installation on the door to the bathroom or bathroom, it is best to stop at the lock with a latch. For the bedroom and children's room, a silent magnetic retainer would be a good option.

Self installation

Mounting the latch into the door leaf is almost identical to the process of cutting into a conventional door lock. This work can be done by hand. The mechanism is placed in the door at a distance of 1 meter from the floor. It is at this height that a wooden beam is located in the door leaf, into which the fixing mechanism is mounted.

To embed the device into an interior door, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • drill and a set of drills (feather, for wood);
  • crowns for wood;
  • electric screwdriver or hand screwdriver;
  • chisels, medium and narrow in width, a milling cutter is a good alternative for making a selection for the bar, but it is far from being found in every home tool kit;
  • hammer;
  • pencil;
  • ruler or square;
  • a knife for carpentry or a sharp stationery.

At the first stage, it is necessary to make markings on both sides of the door leaf. First, the height from the floor, equal to 1 meter, is measured. Then the distance corresponding to the size of the embedded latch is set aside. Most often, locking mechanisms have a standardized height of 60 mm or 70 mm. For greater accuracy, it is better to attach the locking device itself to the door and mark its extreme values.

Next, you need to drill a wooden beam. To do this, select a feather drill that matches the size of the latch mechanism. You need to drill to the depth of the drill blade. The next step is to make a hole for the plank. The procedure is performed using a chisel. Previously, the veneer from the door leaf must be removed with a sharp clerical knife.

For the handle, you need to make a through hole in the timber. For this, a crown is used on a tree. A hole is made at the end of the door for a tongue or roller retainer. The cutouts are neatly aligned with a chisel. The device is installed in the door leaf. You need to do this from the end of the door. The whole mechanism is fixed with screws or self-tapping screws.

The door handle is mounted in an installed and fixed mechanism. It needs to be disassembled first. Next, you can install decorative overlays. The final step in installing the door latch is to mount the striker on the jamb. To do this, close the door and mark the position of the fixing tongue or roller on the jamb. This mark must be transferred to the box.

You also need to measure the distance from the bottom edge of the pothole in the door beam to the center of the latch. Transfer the size to the opening box. According to the measurements obtained, cutouts are made for the tongue and striker. The bar is attached to the door frame with self-tapping screws.
