  2. Measure how much material you need so that it completely covers the bottom of the box, its walls and bends slightly inward (Illustration 1). This can also be done using a ruler. To do this, measure the height and width of the box and measure on the sheet a length equal to these parameters plus another width and plus six to ten centimeters for the bend.
  3. Cut out the desired piece of paper (Illustration 2).
  4. Place the box in the center of the cut out piece of paper and cut out the excess pieces at the corners (Illustration 3).
  5. Cut four small pieces of paper and glue them to the corners of the box (Illustration 4).
  6. Now coat the walls with glue and glue the paper (Illustration 5).
  7. Coat the inside of the box and wrap the paper (Illustration 6).
  8. Cover the lid in the same way.
  9. Let the box dry.

All is ready! Now you can use the box as you wish.

Tip: Don't use too much glue or the paper may warp and ruin the whole look.

  4. Place one side on the paper and outline it. Cut out the part with a margin of a few centimeters on all sides. Glue the paper to one of the sides (illustrations 5 and 6).
  5. Carefully fold the edges of the paper (to the bottom, to the sides and inward). If necessary, make small cuts (Figure 7).
  6. Cover all sides of the box in the same way (Illustrations 8 and 9).
  7. You can paint the inside of the boxes with a suitable color paint. It is better to use acrylic (Illustration 10).

After this, remove the tape. As a result, you have a frame for a white square in the middle with smooth edges.
  4. Choose a suitable picture. It can be depicted on a napkin, plain paper, wallpaper, and so on.
  5. Cut out the picture and put it in the water.
  6. Then take the picture out of the water, place it on a piece of oilcloth (an A4 file is perfect for this purpose) face down, and blot the top several times with a cotton or paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  7. Cover the picture with PVA glue or decoupage glue.
  8. Also coat the lid where the picture will be glued with glue.
  9. Transfer the oilcloth with the image to the lid. To do this, simply turn the picture over and straighten it with your fingers.
  10. Carefully remove the oilcloth.
  11. When the picture is dry, the entire cover should be coated with acrylic varnish.
  12. To prevent the borders of the picture from being too prominent and conspicuous, apply white paint to the edges of the image and gently blend it with a large brush or sponge (you can take a piece of foam rubber).
  13. To make the picture look harmonious, you can additionally add some touches with acrylic paint (for example, shadows and highlights, background).
  14. When you are done with the background and image, coat the entire surface of the box lid with varnish.
  15. Decorate the walls if desired.

We all love to please our family and friends by periodically presenting them with gifts. At the same time, we try to beautifully decorate the gift so that it is memorable and special. However, the right size packaging or a suitable colorful box is not always at hand. However, finding a way out is not that difficult. All you have to do is find a box, maybe a shoe box, and decorate it with wallpaper. How to wallpaper a box with your own hands? The task seems, at first glance, to be quite simple. However, if you don’t know the specifics of the job, it’s quite difficult to cope with it.

Today we will talk about how to properly cover a gift box, not only achieving a pleasing result, but also saving some money. Interestingly, in addition to wallpaper, you can use paper, fabric, film and other materials for this. However, let's talk about everything in order.

What you will need

So, let's start our master class and learn how to beautifully decorate a cardboard box for gifts, both outside and inside. What materials and tools will be needed for work? Here's a short list of everything you might need when decorating a box with wallpaper:

Of course, you need to choose a box that will become the basis for creating a beautiful decoration. One of the main conditions is the strength of the material. It is desirable that the walls of the box are thick, and the corners and joints are connected by reinforcing elements. Packaging from small appliances, for example, an electric kettle, shoes, etc., is quite suitable.

Attention! Despite the fact that a significant part of the packaging boxes from modern technology are made of corrugated cardboard, this material is very suitable. The only condition for its use is that before gluing it is recommended to additionally glue the edges of the box so that they are not damaged in the future.

We select materials

Of course, after that you need to find wallpaper. Leftovers will do just fine, but make sure they are of sufficient size. As for the material from which they were made (paper, vinyl, outlining or textile), it does not matter much. Much more important is the design, style and condition of the surface.

After that, you have to choose the right glue. In this case, almost any wallpaper adhesive composition will work. However, in this particular case, the optimal solution is to use well-proven PVA glue. It is very inexpensive and glues paper and cardboard perfectly.

And finally, if we talk about the necessary materials, we cannot fail to mention a special protective varnish, the main task of which is to reliably protect the finished product from damage and moisture.

Selecting Tools

As a rule, ordinary scissors or a stationery knife will be enough for you. However, for greater convenience, you can use a whole set of tools that will make your work faster and more convenient. So, in addition to a knife and scissors, you may need: a clamp for temporary fastening, brushes, and a ruler. Sometimes a compass can also be used additionally. Well, now let's talk in more detail about the process itself.

Scheme of work

Despite the fact that there are several common methods for gluing trellises onto boxes among packaging specialists, we will focus on the simplest of them, since it will be easier for beginners who will easily master this technique. Here's a quick guide:

  1. We take the remaining wallpaper, cut off a piece (this must be done with a margin) and straighten it on the work surface. This could be a floor or table covered with newspapers or film.
  2. We place our box of shoes or household appliances on the trellises and apply markings. It can be done either with a knife or using an ordinary pencil.
  3. After this, you need to wrap the sides of the box with wallpaper, folding the edges to the inside. We press.
  4. Then we remove the wallpaper from the box and carefully remove any unnecessary wallpaper with a knife or scissors.
  5. Next we move on to pasting. First of all, apply glue to the bottom of the box, place it on the previously outlined place and press the wallpaper to the box.
  6. After this, apply glue to the sides of the box and press it. And finally, last of all, we glue those parts of the wallpaper that are located inside.
  7. In order for such gift wrapping to look good from the inside, it must be additionally decorated. To do this, we need to decorate it with beautiful paper (preferably thick), preferably one-color. As an option, noble elegant fabric is quite suitable. The best options may be materials such as velor, satin, tartan, etc. The packaging is finished, now you can move on to decorating it.

Decorating the packaging

Let's first look at such an interesting pasting technique as decoupage. To decorate using this method, you will need to choose some attractive pattern, maybe more than one. As a unique decoration, you can use napkins with a pattern already cut out on them. And in general, any thin paper, such as tissue paper, will do.

Interesting to know! In cases where you decorate using two-layer paper wallpaper, it is advisable to cut out images on one of the two layers, taking care to separate them first.

Now a little about how decoupage is done correctly. Almost all of us are well aware that when it comes to learning any skills, it is better to see 1 time than to hear 100 times. That is why we advise you to familiarize yourself with the thematic video instructions, where the features of this decoration technique are described in as much detail as possible. So, let's look:

Be that as it may, there is absolutely no need to limit yourself solely to the use of decoupage. To solve such problems, there have long been specially developed and tested alternative methods for decorating packaging boxes with the aim of converting them into gift boxes. So, let’s list some advantages and features of using other methods of decorating boxes with wallpaper:

  • If you decide to use fiberglass or non-woven fabrics, then remember that such wallpaper can be painted. To paint glass wallpaper correctly and beautifully, you need to use special types of paints. First of all, we are talking about alcohol-based and water-based dyes. It should also be taken into account that their composition must be acrylic.
  • In addition, you can use an additional layer of special decorative varnish, which will not only help keep the surface intact, but also make the box more interesting. In addition, this transparent composition is absolutely safe for human health.
  • Additionally, you can make a beautiful decor for the lid. As a rule, a special packaging ribbon of bright colors is used for this, imitating a tied bow, or small lace elements.

Attention! If you don’t have enough time or imagination to create some interesting decorative ideas, you can do it very simply. Use regular vinyl stickers to decorate your walls. Fortunately, you can buy them not only in specialized wallpaper stores and online stores, but often also in regular supermarkets, in the departments of home goods and repairs.

The classic way to decorate boxes with paper

It is very good if you have a large enough piece of paper or fabric to cover the box. Place a box in its center and outline its bottom with a pencil. Then, also by trying on, draw the contours of the walls for cutting. Be sure to leave allowances of at least 1 cm at the edges of the elements. If you plan to cover the lid of the box, make the same pattern for it. Cut out the paper blanks and start gluing the box.

First of all, glue the bottom, use double-sided tape or glue. The most important stage of work is pasting the walls. Your task is to carefully seal the corners and prevent wrinkles from appearing. How to cover a box with paper evenly? Start gluing each side from the bottom, carefully smoothing and pressing. Then glue the paper at the top. Leave allowances designed to be folded inward unglued. Cover all four walls of the box with paper. Lastly, fix the allowances, beautifully decorating the top edge of the box.

How to beautifully cover a box with paper if there is not enough material?

Sometimes small scraps of wallpaper and gift paper remain from repairs or gift wrapping. If desired, even small pieces can be used to decorate interior storage boxes. Cut the walls and bottom with separate parts, do not forget to make allowances. If there is very little paper, the bottom of the container does not need to be covered.

How to properly cover a box with paper using small pieces? If your container is rectangular, start with the long sides. Then glue the paper onto the remaining sides. Lastly, the bottom is glued and the upper part of the walls is decorated.

Mosaic or collage is an interesting technique for decorating storage containers

You can decorate storage boxes in an original and interesting way by covering them with separate paper elements. Using this technique, you can make complex appliqué, depicting decorative patterns or pictures. An alternative option is to arrange the pieces of paper randomly, resulting in an abstract mosaic.

When gluing a container using this technique, be sure to use glue; tape will not work. You can use any paper - colored, packaging. If you want to create plot applications or depict some patterns, make templates in advance. Making them is very simple - draw the desired images on plain paper and cut them out. Then, using these patterns, cut out all the parts separately.

The abstract mosaic technique is much easier to perform. You can decorate a box in it by cutting out arbitrary elements of different colors immediately before gluing it to the base. Abstract or freeform mosaics are an excellent technique for children's crafts. Even a small child will understand how to cover a box with colored paper using this principle.

Decor of interior storage boxes

If you used thin paper to decorate the interior box, it can be varnished to give the product strength. Dry the craft first, it is advisable to wait at least a day. Colorless acrylic varnish must be applied in 2-3 layers. After the composition has completely dried, you can begin decorating the product.

You can make the box more beautiful and original by decorating it with ribbon. Just tie the container in the middle or step back a couple of centimeters from the top edge. You can additionally make a bow on the ribbon.

You already know how to cover a box with gift paper. But what else can you decorate it with besides the ribbon? To decorate an original craft, you can use artificial flowers, rhinestones or large beads. If you plan to make several boxes that are roughly the same size, you might want to consider making labels for them. You can label containers using regular rectangles cut from paper or cardboard in a contrasting color. Using curly scissors or hole punches, you can create interesting designs on the edges of the label.

Each of us loves a beautifully decorated interior. This commitment becomes especially in demand in cases where interior solutions affect the good mood and joy of our loved ones.

With the proper ingenuity, you can create any design options with your own hands.

This joy can also be caused by the gifts that we love to give each other. But how can you make sure that the gift is not just ordinary, but something unique and memorable for a long time?

There are several different solutions for this, and today we will talk about one of them: decorating the box using wallpaper, paper, fabric and other similar materials. Covering a box with wallpaper or covering it beautifully with fabric is not as difficult as it might seem at first. Let's look at a short master class that contains step-by-step instructions on how to do it yourself by decorating a cardboard shoe box both inside and outside.

If you do not have experience in such work, there is no need to despair and worry. The scheme of work is quite simple, since it allows you to do the decoration yourself by completing the design according to the pattern. As for choosing a gift box, it can be either with or without a lid: decoration does not depend on its shape. It can be square, rectangular and even round.

Working with paper and wallpaper

Before learning about the process of decorating a box with wallpaper, it is necessary to say a few words about what materials and tools will be necessary and may be needed when performing the work.

Box selection

It would seem that any toy storage box, shoe box, etc. can be suitable for decoration or decoupage. However, this is not entirely true, since an important criterion is not only the appropriate size, but also sufficient strength of the material. In addition, it is important to pay attention to how durable the lid is.

Remember! Packaging from small household appliances and various devices may also be quite suitable. As a rule, packaging containers are made of corrugated cardboard.

Corrugated cardboard (corrugated packaging) is durable packaging that is, in fact, free. The fact is that after purchasing the product you will no longer need it, except for those cases when it can be used for long-term storage or transportation of things, dishes, and so on. An example of such material would be packaging from:

  • Electric kettle.
  • Thermos.
  • Shoes - sneakers, shoes, boots.

By the way, it would be advisable to pay attention to the fact that, despite the fairly strong material, the edges of the box itself may diverge somewhat. It is for this reason that it is advisable to additionally glue them. This will help avoid possible problems associated with deformation in the future.

What tools should you use?

Overall, you won't need many tools. All of them are the most common ones, widely used in everyday life. As a rule, we are talking about ordinary scissors, as well as a stationery knife. At the same time, for greater convenience, you can use some additional devices, such as a ruler, a special clamp that will be used for fixation, and a set of brushes.

How to choose materials

In order to wrap the box, you can use small scraps of leftover wallpaper. In addition, the decor can be made with the following materials:

  1. Newspapers (this will look very stylish, including in some modern interior styles).
  2. Film (including self-adhesive) made from a variety of materials.
  3. Napkins, preferably thick ones.
  4. Paper, especially colored or intended specifically for gift decoration.

The composition of the wallpaper that will be used for decoration can be very different: vinyl, paper, non-woven and even fabric (textile). How to decorate a shoebox using fabric will be discussed below.

Different finishing options offer a lot of possibilities to create any design you like. You can decorate in one style or another, using different patterns, colors and shades: red, brown, blue, yellow, grey, green, turquoise, beige and many other “representatives” of the color scheme. When combined with original patterns and ornaments, they can produce truly beautiful results. No one will believe that you did all this with your own hands.

Advice! For the final finishing of your decorative “box,” you can use a protective clear varnish. Its role is to create a special layer that will clean the surface to be decorated in case of possible ingress of water and other liquids.

In addition to materials, you need to take care of the correct choice of glue. Selecting it is not so difficult: you can use the same adhesive compositions that are used when gluing ordinary wallpaper of one type or another, be it paper, vinyl or non-woven fabrics. When working with paper coverings, time-tested PVA glue, which can be bought at almost any hardware store, will also work well. Its favorable price and excellent characteristics speak in its favor, since it glues paper, cardboard and many other materials well.

Main stages of work

In the practice of home design and decor, there are several ways to cover a box with wallpaper. Some of them are quite complex. Therefore, as an instruction for beginners, it is advisable to focus on the simplest method. So, here is the sequence of necessary actions:

  • First of all, we need to take the proper amount of material. Please note that a few extra centimeters will not hurt, so you need to take a certain margin (overlap). We straighten the wallpaper, leveling it on a table or other similar surface.
  • Then, using a pencil, we mark out a pattern for decorating a shoe box or other product, depending on what exactly you are using.
  • The next step: you need to carefully wrap the box (both its bottom and side parts) with paper, turning it inside and pressing it tightly. Thus, we prepare the wallpaper for gluing. We take them off and put them aside for now.
  • Using a cutting tool, we get rid of unnecessary pieces.
  • Now you can move on to pasting. We apply glue to the bottom of the box (from the outside, of course), and place it on the place outlined with a pencil. Press tightly. Using the same pattern, we glue the paper to the sides, and then to the inside (those areas that were folded.
  • But that is not all. Everything inside also needs to be glued so that the overall appearance is attractive not only from the outside. Contrasting paper colors are perfect for interior lining. You can use checkered or velvet paper. By the way, some types of fabric are also suitable.

So, after the adhesive composition has completely dried, we can assume that our decorative gift box is ready. On the other hand, you can go even further and continue decorating it. We'll talk about this below.

How to make decoupage

In addition to simple pasting, we can also talk about such processing technology as decoupage. In order to complete it, it is necessary, first of all, to select a drawing that would act as a plot. As for the material, a fairly popular solution is to use two-layer paper wallpaper, which is also known as “duplex”.

However, the best solution in such matters is to watch a video tutorial on how to decorate using this method of decorating boxes. Therefore, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with a more detailed master class:

How to cover a box with fabric

In addition to decorating with wallpaper from newspapers or even tissue paper, there is another possibility for decoration. We are talking about the use of fabric. You can cover the box with fabric using a covering. This is a fairly simple method that allows you to create a unique design and, in its own way, exclusive item.

Note! Using this technique, you can not only sheathe the packaging itself, but also make an attractive textile cover for a gift box. Especially considering that while working you may end up with extra scraps of fabric.

Such an item can act as a separate independent gift, and also be an excellent place to store all kinds of small household items. These can be children's toys, home decor items, sewing supplies and much more. You can especially please your mother or daughter with such gift wrapping. Many women are very fond of such decorative elements. So, here's what you'll need to cover a gift box with fabric:

  1. The box itself. When choosing it, you can use the same principles as described above to work with wallpaper, film or newspapers.
  2. The fabric you are going to use to cover it. It is desirable that it be dense. Denim, which is known to be made from cotton, is suitable. But some other varieties are also acceptable. It’s best to take at least two colors, but more is possible
  3. Special glue and tape (it is better to use double-sided).
  4. Sharp scissors.
  5. Additionally, it is necessary to say about a durable cord, the shade of which should either match or contrast with the fabric base, as well as an awl, which may also be needed.

Well, now let's move on to a brief listing of the main stages of the work. To do everything correctly and count on a good result, it is advisable to strictly follow these instructions:

  • Make a pattern for a square or rectangular box that has relatively right angles easiest way. All you need to do is measure the size of the sides and also leave some margin for the part that will fold over to the other side. At the same time, it will not be easy to sew round or oval shaped trim. By the way, you can see examples of what happens as a result in the photo below.
  • We glue the main part. At the same time, it is advisable to choose a suitable glue that will not saturate the fabric through and through, leaving unsightly streaks and stains. It is permissible to use high-quality double-sided tape, provided that it firmly glues the fabric and cardboard together.
  • When working, it is advisable to make sure that the fabric is pressed tightly against the cardboard, without leaving folds or “waves.” If necessary, you will need to get rid of excess material.
  • After the design of the external sides is completed, we move on to gluing the inside.

Interesting! If necessary, you can make a decorative handle. They are made using a cord. It is either threaded through small holes made in advance, secured with knots, or glued, which, on the other hand, is a little less reliable.

Beautiful homemade boxes may be needed as packaging for gifts to your family and friends. To create such original packaging, unwanted candy boxes, shoe boxes, postal boxes, etc. are used. It is important that the gift item has a neat appearance. For this activity, time and space free from work are allocated so that nothing can interfere with the creative process. Also, unnecessary boxes are used to make interesting organizers, all kinds of shelves, chests for writing instruments, notebooks and even jewelry.

How to cover a box with paper - materials used

For a fruitful workflow you will need the following items:

  • Convenient sharp scissors - they can be used to cut paper and cardboard.
  • Glue “Dragon”, “PVA” or “Paste”. “Dragon” is a polymer glue that holds different materials together very well, is sold in large bottles, and is easy to use. “PVA” - dries quickly, sticks to thin paper, is cheap and easily available. Paste is a homemade glue based on flour and water.
  • An unnecessary brush that will be needed to apply glue to the surface to be glued. If using “Dragon”, a small rubber spatula is suitable.
  • Scotch tape (double tape) or a stapler can be useful in difficult places where reliable fastening is needed.
  • A simple pencil, a pen - with the help of these accessories marks are made on paper or a box.
  • Long ruler - will serve to accurately mark the measured length and width of a paper sheet.

How to cover a box with paper - types of paper

  • This can be wrapping paper for wrapping gifts, sold in stationery stores and supermarkets.
  • Wallpaper - now there is a huge number of unique designs on completely different subjects on sale.
  • Interesting small-caliber repeating elements of flowers, lightning, hearts (textures) printed in high resolution.
  • In order to give the box a pleasant appearance, it is necessary to paste it with paper with a pattern strictly in accordance with the direction of the picture and ornament.

How to cover a box with paper - the process

  • If a large sheet of paper is available, the box is placed on this sheet. The most basic, and therefore conspicuous, parts of the box must be pasted over in one go, with a continuous sheet, so that there are no inconsistencies in the design.
  • Mark the bottom and allowances on the side walls with a pencil on the wrong side of the paper so that the paper fits well.
  • After marking, the resulting pattern is tried on and cut out. Avoid sloppy areas of paper layering. All irregularities should be cut out with scissors.
  • Mark the cut sheet with a number or “bottom” mark.
  • The same must be done with all other planes. The side of the box required for gluing is placed on complete sheets of paper and measured together with the tolerance for the corners. Then the pattern and the part of the box it corresponds to are marked.
  • After all the planes have been selected and cut out, it is time for gluing. Imagine which part is better to do first and last. The closing part and walls must be made without tolerances because they overlap the joints.
  • The glue is applied to the paper so as not to spoil the appearance of the drawing. And be sure to glue all the edges of the pattern so that there are no unevenness or swelling.
  • When gluing, you need to remember that the glue has an odor. After the final touches of the work, the box is placed in a well-ventilated place. Polymer glue dries and erodes longer than PVA or paste.

How to cover a box with paper - paper patterns for decoration

  • After the main gluing, the product can be improved with decorative paper tapes. To do this you need to choose a color and texture. If the box is plain red or brown, white and beige patterns will look good on it. If the wrapping paper has a pattern, then the decorating details may be plain or completely absent.
  • Multi-colored cardstock paper and quilling ribbons are great for such purposes (they are also attached with glue). Chipboard decorations (very thick cardboard) and decorative tape are also used.

Creative fantasies can take a needlewoman far. Therefore, you should be careful not to overdo it with the saturation of the appearance of the product. Bows and lace will look beautiful only when they are appropriate. Thin paper requires a special approach; the glue should be applied quickly; no time is allowed for impregnation, because unsightly swelling or tears may result. It is best to use medium-weight paper, not thin or thick.
