Zeus - in ancient Greek mythology, the god of the sky, thunder and lightning, in charge of the whole world. The chief of the Olympian gods, the third son of the titan Kronos and Rhea (erroneously the son of Kronos and Gaia). Brother of Hades, Hestia, Demeter, and Poseidon. Zeus' wife is the goddess Hera. Father of gods and men. In Roman mythology, he was identified with Jupiter. The attributes of Zeus were: a shield and a double-sided ax (labrys), sometimes an eagle; Olympus (Olympian Zeus) was considered the seat. Zeus is thought of as “fire”, “hot substance”, living in the ether, owning the sky, organizing the center of the cosmic and social life. In addition, he distributes good and evil on earth, put shame and conscience in people. Zeus is a formidable punishing force, sometimes he is associated with fate, sometimes he himself acts as a creature subject to Moira - fate, fate. He can foresee the future. He proclaims the fate of fate through dreams, as well as thunder and lightning. The whole social order was built by Zeus, he is the patron of urban life, the protector of the offended and the patron of those who pray, he gave people laws, established the power of kings, also protects the family and home, monitors the observance of traditions and customs. The birth of Zeus belongs to the third generation of gods who overthrew the second generation - the titans. The father of Zeus Kronos was predicted that he was destined to be defeated by his own son and, in order not to be overthrown by his children, he each time swallowed the child just born to Rhea. Rhea finally decided to deceive her husband and secretly gave birth to another child - Zeus. According to Pausanias, "to enumerate all those areas that claim to be considered the birthplace and upbringing of Zeus from them, it would be impossible even for someone who would approach this issue with all seriousness." Different versions of the myth name the island of Crete (a cave in Mount Dikte [or Mount Ida) or Phrygia (Mount Ida) as the birthplace. Instead of a newborn, she gave Kronos a swaddled stone to swallow. The navel of Zeus fell off at the city of Fena in Crete. The newborn Zeus was bathed in the river Lusius in Arcadia. According to Theodore of Samothrace, Ptolemy Hephaestion, having been born, laughed continuously for 7 days, which is why the number 7 is sacred. According to the Cretan version of the myth, Zeus was given to the education of the Curetes and Corybantes, who fed him with the milk of the goat Amalthea. Also in Crete, he was fed with bee honey. According to another version, he was fed by a goat in the town of Aegius in Achaia. According to legend, guards guarded the cave and every time little Zeus started to cry, they banged their shields with spears so that Kronos would not hear it.

POWER FIGHT When Zeus grew up, he made a potion that caused Kronos to spit out Zeus' brothers. According to one version, Zeus was brought up on Naxos. When he went on a campaign against the titans, he noticed an eagle and guessed a good omen in it. When the gods divided the birds, Zeus got the eagle. On the scepter of Zeus is an eagle. When Zeus opposed Kronos, the gods made an alliance. The altar on which they swore they made a constellation. Then, together with Zeus, the gods began to fight with Kronos. The battle lasted 9 years, but did not reveal the winner. Then Zeus freed the Cyclopes and the Hundred-armed from Tartarus, who swore allegiance to Zeus. Finally, the titans were defeated and cast into the abyss.

ATTEMPTS TO OVERTHROW The first attempt to overthrow Zeus was made by Poseidon, Hera and Apollo: they chained Zeus with a chain and already wanted to imprison him in Tartarus, but his beloved Nereid Thetis called for help from the son of Uranus, the hecatoncheir Briareus. After the rebellion, Poseidon and Apollo built the walls of Troy, and Hera was suspended on golden chains between heaven and earth. The second time was a prophecy that no one knew except Gaia and Prometheus. Zeus did not dare to disturb Gaia, since she was so ancient and respectable, and Prometheus did not say anything to Zeus then, for he ruled cruelly and greedily. Zeus chained Prometheus, but after many years Prometheus revealed the prophecy to Zeus, and he did not marry Thetis.

The ancient Greeks settled their gods on the highest Mount Olympus. Its top was always, even on the clearest day, covered with clouds and remained inaccessible to the human eye. It was there, behind the clouds, that the Greek gods lived, and from the heights of Olympus they followed the affairs of people. From here they generously rewarded people for good deeds or severely punished for misconduct and sins.

He married the goddess Gaia and they had many children: first the titans - six huge giants, then the cyclops (one-eyed monsters), and then three ugly monsters, each with a hundred arms and fifty heads - hecatoncheirs. Uranus greeted the birth of each of his descendants with ever-increasing horror. Looking at them, Uranus was afraid that someday the children would rise up against him and kill him. Therefore, he began to swallow every newborn child, and already grown up he threw into Tartarus - a gloomy Abyss.

slide 5

Gaia suffered. Then she forged a very strong sickle from iron, which was capable of cutting off any head, and went down with it to Tartarus, where her children languished.
